Tetsuya strolled easily along the forest road opened up by the League. There were few people here, and the breeze against his face made his already good mood even more pleasant.
There was no need to wonder why there were no Trainers on such a safe road. To ensure smooth traffic, the Pokemon Alliance regularly issued missions to hire people to clear out Pokemon within two kilometers of the road.
Under these circumstances, over time, no Pokemon would come near this place at all, not to mention any gains.
Trainers came to Viridian Forest for adventure either to make money or to hone themselves. Naturally, they would not take the main road.
Besides, there was a famous saying in the Pokemon World: "True Trainers are those who constantly carve out new paths through primeval forests."
So it was hardly strange for the place to be devoid of human traces.
But none of that had anything to do with Tetsuya. Watching the beautiful sunset, he tightened the Spatial Backpack behind him and quickened his pace back to Viridian City.
Viridian City Pokemon Center.
"Ding-dong." The Pokemon Watch's notification sound rang out.
Tetsuya quickly walked up to the treatment counter and showed Joy his Alliance ID Card.
"Hello, Tamaki Trainer. Your Pidgeotto has fully recovered. Please take your Poke Ball."
After using the machine to confirm his identity, Joy spoke to Tetsuya with a professional smile.
Tetsuya sincerely thanked her, took the Poke Ball, and immediately left.
It was not because Tetsuya was especially polite. One reason was his genuine gratitude for the treatment of his Pokemon; the other was that no one wanted to offend the Joy Family.
Although most Joys were quite understanding and would not do anything to you over a little rudeness.
But if one day you made a Joy think you were not a qualified good Trainer, then congratulations—within the entire League, you would no longer be able to enjoy any services from any Pokemon Center. Note: any services.
Not just treatment. You would be unable to accept or submit many missions, register for the Regional Conference, or even use the official Forum or conduct trades.
Of course, there seemed to have been only a handful of such people in League history, so there was no need to worry too much.
With his backpack on, Tetsuya wandered alone through the bustling cluster of buildings, feeling only lonely and out of place.
In the blink of an eye, he had already been in this world for sixteen years, Tetsuya sighed.
In his Past Life, he had merely been an Ordinary Human. After waking from a nap, he discovered that he had transmigrated into this magical world—a place that, in his memories, had been an anime world.
He had even become a baby, just like in the novels: a pitiful child abandoned at the entrance of an orphanage.
The one thing worth being grateful for was that this world's society and technology were extraordinarily advanced compared to his Past Life, so its welfare system was also exceptionally thorough.
When every orphan reached around three years old in the orphanage, the League would send someone to teach them basic literacy. Once they mastered that, they could Head Towards school to study fundamental knowledge.
After passing the basic knowledge examinations, orphans could choose different subjects to study based on the excellence of their grades. This was further advanced education, and outstanding students only needed to pay 1,000 Alliance Coins per subject—up to three subjects at most.
Tetsuya was precisely such an outstanding talent, or rather, even more outstanding than that.
Perhaps because his reincarnated soul had been strengthened, Tetsuya had not been some genius with an exceptionally high IQ in his Past Life. But in this life, during his studies, he could even achieve the exaggerated feat of having a Photographic Memory.
Because of that, and because the League only required students to pass the examinations, Tetsuya had completed his literacy and basic knowledge studies at the age of seven—three full years ahead of the usual pace of ten-year-olds.
Not to Mention that Tetsuya's grades had been exceptionally outstanding. With a grand wave of its hand, the League waived the cost of all three advanced subjects for the sake of such a genius. That was a full 3,000 Alliance Coins, an enormous sum for Tetsuya when he had still been a child.
Thus, Tetsuya was grateful to the League from the bottom of his heart. After all, it was through the knowledge of these three specialties that he had survived in this world until now.
Pokemonology, Pharmacology, and Berryology—those were the subjects Tetsuya had chosen to study back then.
Ever since he had left the orphanage at twelve, he had Depend on for Survival on the first two to survive in Viridian Forest and gradually improve his life.
Do not think that was an exaggeration. An Ordinary Human needed a full four years to study a single subject, and that was only enough to barely pass the examinations.
Yet Tetsuya had spent five years mastering all three subjects, with exceptionally excellent grades. At the time, teachers at the League school had even felt that he could develop in the direction of becoming a Pokemon scholar.
But Tetsuya knew very well that as an orphan, even if he became a Pokemon scholar, there was a High Probability he would go years without producing any research results and ultimately be unable to support himself. So he had instead chosen a profession that brought in money quickly.
Thinking of this, Tetsuya happened to stop and look up at the large words above the gate before him—Bounty Hunter Center.
Tetsuya smiled and stepped inside.
Counter 2 of Trading Department.
Tetsuya waited in line for a while. The queue was short, and it was soon his turn.
The staff member spoke expressionlessly, "Please place the items you wish to sell on the counter in front of you."
Tetsuya was very familiar with the process. Before the staff member even finished speaking, he had already taken the items out of his backpack.
"Five Beedrill stingers, 2,000 Alliance Coins each, 10,000 Alliance Coins total; Ekans Shed Skin. Unfortunately, it isn't Arbok's. It is worth 50 Alliance Coins per gram. There are 620 grams here, totaling 31,000 Alliance Coins."
"There's even Beedrill honey. You've got some nerve, and your luck is pretty good too. It's worth 1,000 Alliance Coins per gram. There are 421 grams here, totaling 421,000 Alliance Coins. Together with the previous two items, that comes to 462,000 Alliance Coins."
The staff member expertly quoted the prices, then let out a brief remark of surprise.
Listening to the quote, Tetsuya had been prepared, but the generous haul still pleasantly surprised him.
After the staff member transferred the money, Tetsuya took the ID Card handed back to him, casually left a good rating, and departed the Trading Department.
Arriving at the Mission Hall, Tetsuya walked up to a machine marked with a red-and-white Poke Ball.
"Codename: Mercenary. Submitting mission number 573677400."
Tetsuya inserted his Alliance ID Card into the slot on the machine.
A photo of Tetsuya immediately appeared on the Machine Screen. Beside it were his Bounty Hunter codename, Mercenary, and the details of his completion of this mission.
A Red Light swept over him.
"Identity confirmed. Codename: Mercenary. Mission number: 573677400. Please place the required mission items in the entrance below."
This line immediately appeared on the Machine Screen.
Tetsuya took out another large pile of herbs from his backpack. These were the Star Grass required for his mission. It grew sporadically in places where Grass-type Pokemon appeared in dense numbers. Harvesting it was moderately difficult but very time-consuming, and the mission issuer had demanded quite a large quantity.
After he placed them into the storage slot below, the machine automatically closed the lid.
"Scanning."
