Affected by the dense fog, Jiang Pu's ascent was not progressing quickly. So far, she had only covered a short distance from the foot of the mountain.
Yet she had gained something during this process: she had discovered the source of the low roars and hissing cries within the fog.
Jiang Pu was currently lying prone beside the mountain path. Not far ahead of her, two exotic beasts with six legs and three ears, shaped like foxes and resembling jackals, were passing through the area.
"Whoosh—huff—"
Jiang Pu controlled her breathing, keeping it even and slow. Other than that, she made no sound at all.
These exotic beasts had extremely small eyes and noses, nearly useless. Even with Jiang Pu lying less than two feet away, as long as they heard no noise, they remained completely unaware of her presence.
The two Six-Legged Jackals raised all three ears and listened for a while. Finding no movement, they spread their legs and headed elsewhere.
Their six legs moved with remarkable coordination, as steady as wheels fitted with soft padding. Concealed by the mountain breeze, their footsteps were difficult to distinguish unless one listened with utmost care.
After half a quarter-hour, once she was certain the two exotic beasts had gone far away, Jiang Pu slowly shifted her body and crept back onto the main mountain path, secretly letting out a breath.
These three-eared Six-Legged Jackals communicated information among their kind through repeated low roars. Their cries were not loud, yet they could carry an extremely long distance through the dense fog.
And the owner of that other hissing sound...
