Background / History
Shirou is a diligent student known for taking on repair work, including fixing the student council's fan heater. His practical skill and readiness to help others lead Isshin to entrust further repairs to him. 46
Before the Fifth Holy Grail War, he trained relentlessly, performing extreme physical conditioning and swimming against a freezing river's current. His training was motivated by his goal of becoming a “hero of justice.” 9 83
During the opening events of the war, Shirou witnesses Rin and Archer fighting Lancer. His curiosity brings him too close to the confrontation, and Lancer fatally stabs him; Rin spends her ancestral gems to save his life. 68 He subsequently becomes Saber's Master and learns from Shinji that the Holy Grail War is a battle between seven Masters and their Servants. 71
Shirou chooses to remain in the war because it was connected to the fire that traumatized him ten years earlier. However, he refuses to accept harming innocents or treating people such as Illya as enemies merely because the war demands it. 83
Personality
Shirou is straightforward, sharp-minded, and deeply compassionate. He instinctively prioritizes civilians and friends over tactical convenience: he intervenes for Shinji, worries over Mitsuzuri, and delays an attack on Caster to avoid endangering the monks at Ryuudou Temple. 68 88 119
His ideal is not simply victory or survival. He wants everyone to be happy, even after confronting the consequences and apparent impossibility of that wish through Red Archer's experiences. Rather than abandon it, he resolves to seek another path. 264
Shinji considers Shirou's benevolence genuine: his motives may include personal fulfillment, but his intentions and actions remain consistently kind. 245

He forms temporary alliances with Rin and Illya against Caster, while consistently arguing that innocent bystanders—particularly the monks at Ryuudou Temple—must not be sacrificed for a tactical advantage. 118 119

Confrontation with Red Archer
Facing Red Archer, Shirou learns of the despair that turned another version of himself into a cynical enforcer of justice. Rather than reject his own ideal, Shirou concludes that he still cannot abandon the wish for everyone to be happy. 259 264
Future Studies
Shirou considers advancing his magecraft studies through the Clock Tower, partly because Archer once studied there. 284 Shinji instead arranges his acceptance into the Mage's Association and offers to find him a suitable teacher. 286
