The shinobi world was riddled with wounds from evil

Uchiha Chisen's voice thundered in Izumi's ears.

She took a deep breath of air thick with the growing stench of blood.

As she slowly stood up, she could still hear the short man at her feet groaning and wailing, his voice growing weaker.

"I've told you everything... save me... please save me... please, I don't want to die..."

Izumi pressed her lips together.

For a genin who had graduated from the Ninja Academy less than a month ago, this was still far too shocking and overwhelming.

"Where do you live?" After learning that he was a beast who had murdered his own daughter, Izumi no longer felt that sympathy for the short man. She first questioned him about his address so they could find the child's body.

After she faintly heard him give an address in a weak voice.

Izumi summoned her courage and turned to Uchiha Chisen. "Sir, should we split up? I'll take him to Konoha Hospital, and you can go find the child's body?"

Uchiha Chisen said flatly, "Rookie, do you know what sentence you get in Konoha for killing someone while drunk?"

Izumi froze. "L-life imprisonment?!"

Uchiha Chisen shook his head. "Ten-year imprisonment. After ten years, a thoroughly evil bastard like this gets to live in the sunlight again. In fact, if he behaves well in prison, he won't even need to serve ten years. He might get out after seven or eight."

"Tell me. Does that punishment fit the crime?"

Izumi said timidly, "Ten years... seems a little short, doesn't it? No matter how you look at it, that doesn't seem like a fitting punishment."

The moral principles of the Uchiha genin girl, who was only twelve, made her instinctively feel that the sentence was too short.

Was the price of murder in Konoha really that low?

Could murder be forgiven if you were drunk?

She swallowed nervously, her eyes drifting toward the short man.

Drag him along?

Izumi felt under tremendous pressure.

Under the frightened or stunned gazes of civilians and shinobi, she gritted her teeth, gripped the back of the short man's collar with both hands, and struggled to keep up with Uchiha Chisen.

The short man's ghastly wounds where his legs had been severed scraped constantly against the ground. He screamed and struggled in terror.

Listening to him, Izumi could hardly bear it.

But when she looked at Uchiha Chisen's tall, straight back and remembered the suffocating feeling of his gaze growing colder as she hesitated during the interrogation...

Izumi could only try to harden her heart.

She did not dare look back. She could only imagine whether the short man's crimson blood was drawing a long, straight line down the street.

Izumi felt his struggles grow weaker and weaker.

She felt the fearful eyes of nearby Konoha civilians on her, as though they were looking at an evildoer's accomplice.

She heard his cries fade.

Until...

He went completely still.

Startled, Izumi hastily looked back, then hurriedly called out to Uchiha Chisen in fright. "Chisen, he's gone into shock!"

Uchiha Chisen paused briefly. Without looking back, he simply asked, "Can you wake him up?"

"Let me check..."

Izumi carefully checked for breath beneath the short man's nose. Her heart trembled, and she answered in a panic, "I think... it's too late. He... this man is already dead!!!"

Uchiha Chisen said regretfully, "What a shame."

Izumi froze.

Then she heard him continue, "He still died too easily. That wasn't enough to pay for his sins. My original plan was to have you drag him home. Once we'd retrieved the child's body, we would execute him right in front of it."

"And," Uchiha Chisen added, glancing back, "I was going to let you try your hand at it, rookie."

Izumi was dumbstruck.

"S-sir..." Izumi said timidly, "I've read the Konoha Military Police Force's code of conduct. I think it said that after arresting a criminal, we aren't allowed to inflict punishment on our own authority. I think that was a rule Lord Hokage added to the force's handbook."

Uchiha Chisen asked, "Rookie, do you think the lofty Third Hokage represents [justice]?"

Izumi did not dare make a sound.

Uchiha Chisen gazed at the girl, who was only half Uchiha by blood, and said slowly, "To be a good member of the Konoha Military Police Force, you first need to know who the enemies of [justice] are. All the evil in the shinobi world is an enemy of [justice]."

"The shinobi world is already riddled with wounds from countless evils. Only by enforcing [justice] with absolute, uncompromising methods can we set it back on the right path."

I-including Lord Hokage? Izumi only dared let that question pass through her mind. She did not dare ask it aloud.

"Including the Hokage."

A moment later, as though he could read her mind, Uchiha Chisen made that shocking declaration without the slightest reservation.

Izumi was stunned with fear.

What Izumi did not know was that the instant the short man died of shock from excessive blood loss...

A notification from Uchiha Chisen's golden finger appeared before his eyes.
