"..."
The smile on Luthor's face stiffened slightly. Clark patted him on the shoulder and laughed to ease the awkwardness.
"Lex, life doesn't have to be about ruling the world to have meaning."
In the distance, Clark caught sight of Lana's graceful figure. A smile appeared on his face unconsciously, and he was just about to step forward and greet her.
Then another familiar figure appeared. Whitney was at Lana's side.
Football practice had ended earlier that day. Hearing that Lana would be here, Whitney had gotten himself a ticket and followed her again, hoping to reconcile with his ex-girlfriend.
Seeing that the relationship between the two seemed to have eased somewhat, and that they were chatting from time to time, Clark's expression darkened.
"It's good to have some drive in life, don't you think, Clark?"
Luthor patted him back on the shoulder.
"Only warriors bold enough to charge forward can win a lady's favor."
He smiled as he offered advice, hoping to grow closer to Clark by teaching him how to pursue girls.
Setting aside everything else, he truly felt grateful to Clark for saving his life.
"I'm going outside for some air."
Not far away, Lana wore a pale pink gown. A beautiful green crystal necklace hung conspicuously against the exposed skin of her fair neck. Clark said gloomily.
David shook his head to himself. Clark had brought this on himself.
Ignoring Clark, he continued wandering through the museum. There were still several egyptian artifacts here that, unlike that gaudy, eye-catching suit of armor, possessed a uniquely ancient charm.
"You actually thought you could run?"
In the park's bushes, Jax Fran wore a vicious expression as he knocked someone to the ground with a punch.
"I can't find it. I don't know where the company's confidential client files are. Please let me go." The man pleaded, blood at the corner of his mouth.
"Since you don't want to work for me, get ready to spend a few years behind bars."
He rolled the man over roughly, pulled out handcuffs, and threatened him fiercely.
Everyone had secrets they didn't want exposed.
Jax Fran was a detective who walked the line between black and white, digging up people's secrets and using them to control others into working for him.
But being a detective was merely his job. What he truly loved was that green cash.
As long as there was profit to be made, he would stop at nothing.
Whoosh!
Clark walked out of the museum and down the steps.
He took several deep breaths of fresh air and looked up at the towering buildings and steel forest surrounding him.
"Compared to the town, this place is so prosperous it feels like another world."
His gaze shifted to the deserted streets at night, silent and bleak.
Beneath a bus stop sign not far away, a homeless man in ragged clothes lay curled up on a bench with his dog, shivering in his sleep.
"Okay, maybe it's not all that different."
Helplessness flashed through his eyes.
Screech!
A public bus approached in the distance. Just as it neared the stop sign—
The driver suddenly seemed to suffer a heart attack. His face turned pale, and he slumped unconscious over the wheel. The steering wheel twisted, and the bus headed straight for the stop sign, about to smash it apart and run over the homeless man on the bench.
"Oh no!"
At that critical moment, Clark's eyes widened. In an instant, he crossed dozens of meters and positioned himself between the bus and the stop sign.
He raised his hands to stop the bus, intending to protect the homeless man.
Sometimes, the body reacted faster than the brain. Clark had forgotten something, and his expression changed drastically.
Logically, under such enormous inertia, the bus weighing more than ten tons should have slammed into him, crushing its front end. He could save the homeless man, but the driver would not survive.
"No!"
At the moment of imminent impact, when it was already too late, a strange and hidden force field formed and enveloped the entire bus.
Bang!
The speeding bus came to an abrupt halt as if it had struck a solid wall of bronze and iron. Yet only the spot on the front where it had contacted Clark was slightly dented.
The homeless man avoided being crushed into pulp, and the driver was unharmed as well.
"This..."
Clark let out a breath and stared blankly at his palm.
How had he done that?
This wasn't scientific at all!
"So, have you changed your mind?"
In the distant bushes, after delivering a brutal beating, Fran caught his breath. Like an Owlman tormenting its prey, he continued asking with a sinister expression.
"I... I..."
Bang!
Before the man could answer, Fran heard an enormous crash. He looked up and saw an unbelievable sight.
After standing there in a daze, the driver's painful groans brought him back to reality.
Clark hurriedly tore open the bus door, entered the vehicle, and lifted up the driver suffering from a heart attack. Then he vanished in a blur, racing toward Metropolis General Hospital.
Seeing Clark disappear on the spot, Fran's face filled with astonishment. He abandoned the man he had been beating and quickly rushed to the bus. He looked at the clear dent, then at the vanished driver.
He looked around. The street was empty.
He was certain he had not seen a ghost, but he could not stop his heartbeat from accelerating.
Everyone had secrets.
And this time, he seemed to have discovered an earth-shattering secret!
"So, kids, did prosperous Metropolis make you reluctant to leave?"
The next morning, Jonathan and Martha were eating breakfast at the table when Martha smiled.
"The museum was great, but..."
Clark came downstairs, hesitating as if he wanted to say something.
"What?" Jonathan paused with his spoon in hand.
Seated at the table, David handed over a newspaper and said softly, "There was just a little incident."
The headline read: "Out-of-Control Late-Night Bus Nearly Runs Over Homeless Man."
"I stopped it."
Clark recalled the bizarre event from the night before, still unable to understand what had happened.
"Are you all right, Clark?" Martha asked anxiously.
It was a mother's concern. Clark's body of steel naturally would not be harmed, and he scratched his head.
"I'm fine, Mom."
"Clark, you saved a life. I'm very proud of you."
After reading the newspaper, Jonathan frowned. "But did anyone see you?"
That had been prosperous Metropolis.
"It was late at night. There was no one on the avenue, and everyone was inside the museum. The noise didn't alert them."
"The newspaper didn't mention any witnesses. It should be fine."
Martha reassured him.
"That's good." Jonathan smiled.
"Eat up and get to school, kids. You'll miss the school bus soon."
David had heard Clark describe what happened the previous night and knew that the Bio-Field had probably come into play.
Superman's ability to fly relied on the Bio-Field in the first place, so it was not surprising.
Clark was simply a little panicked. Another strange new ability had appeared, and he barely paid attention in class all morning.
When school let out at noon—
Clark pulled David along, planning to first head into the woods outside town to explore his new ability in case it went out of control.
As the two passed through an alley in town—
"Clark Kent, David Kent, correct?"
A middle-aged man slowly stepped out, displayed his badge, and blocked their path with an amused smile. He looked like a hyena that had found rotting meat.
"Gentlemen, I'm Jax Lalan, a Metropolis detective. There's a traffic accident case that requires your assistance with the investigation."
"A traffic accident?"
A police officer from Metropolis made Clark's heart tighten.
Was it because of last night's incident?
But why had he come looking for him?
David narrowed his eyes as he looked at the man's smug expression, like someone who had caught hold of another person's weakness.
