Background
David grew up with the Kent family and Clark, attending high school while keeping his abnormal body and template fusion secret. He later told Clark that his constitution was innate, supported by memories he possessed from birth. Unlike Clark, David initially concealed his power carefully. 2 14
His secret was exposed when he confronted Jeremy, whose threat to the Kents made David willing to kill him preemptively. Clark prevented the killing, and David instead left Jeremy unconscious at the hospital so that his fear, anger, and hatred could continue generating emotional points. 12
David’s acquisition of emotional points becomes central to his growth. He openly provokes hostile opponents and entire factions when their negative reactions can accelerate template fusion, most notably during his campaign against the Amazons. 83 98
Appearance
David is a tall, lean young man with chiseled muscles, short black hair, and sharp features. In his ordinary state, he gives a clean and steady impression. 2
- When drawing on Thanos-derived power, his skin turns purple and deep ridges emerge along his jaw. 2 12
- His body can emit a deep purple radiance, leading to the alias “Purple Light Man.” 111
- He can alter his appearance when necessary. 12
- In his Shazam transformation, he wears a red battle suit with a golden lightning emblem and white cape; his appearance becomes several years older. 154
Personality
David is calm, calculating, and notably difficult to intimidate. Even when confronted by enemies such as Ares, Brainiac, Black Adam, and Darkseid, he assesses their abilities before escalating his own power. 92 144 157 213
His protection of the Kent family is one of his clearest priorities. Threats against Martha, Jonathan, or Clark consistently provoke his coldest and most ruthless responses, though he sometimes restrains himself to avoid unnecessary casualties. 12 72 106
He has little interest in conventional superhero activity and initially rejects Clark’s proposal to form a vigilante team. However, he repeatedly intervenes against threats to Earth and eventually joins the Justice League. 111 154 158
David can be arrogant, mocking enemies while exploiting their fear, pride, or anger for emotional points. He is also pragmatic: he conquers the Amazons without seeking their destruction, uses psychological warfare against Wolf, and defeats Amazo by targeting its inability to understand magic. 85 180 208
Abilities & Skills
Thanos-Derived Physiology
David’s initial template grants an Eternal Divine Race body with overwhelming strength, durability, and endurance.
- His muscles and bones are described as denser than high-alloy steel. 2
- He can withstand electricity, bullets, extreme heat, vacuum, Arctic conditions, and attacks capable of sinking warships. 12 51 90 160
- His physical strength initially surpassed Clark’s, though Clark was faster. 12
- Under life-threatening pressure, his body can further harden and increase in strength, allowing him to surpass Brainiac’s biological shell in direct combat. 144
- His Eternal physiology provides a replenishing reserve of cosmic energy rather than requiring external impacts or electricity to recharge. 43
Energy Manipulation
Through the Black King template, David can absorb, store, convert, and project energy.
- Absorbs kinetic energy from bullets and physical blows. 51 92
- Fires purple energy rays from his hands and eyes; his eye beams can cut through steel and devastate large areas. 44 72
- Can channel cosmic energy into his strikes for greater destructive force. 144
- Initially struggles to absorb thermal energy and is less effective against mystical energy. 43 90
- Eventually converts Hades’ Death God Power rather than being harmed by it. 196
Gravity Manipulation
David’s third template lets him manipulate gravitational forces across a wide area.
- Lifts and moves objects on a massive scale, including mountain peaks. 113
- Uses gravity for flight, reaching nearly 260 times the speed of sound during early testing. 113
- Creates suppressive fields, gravitational shields, attraction effects, beams, and terrain-altering force. 113
- Drags the deep-sea monster Karasen onto land and uses gravity to control opponents such as Kalibak and Wolf. 121 151 180
- Remote high-output gravity techniques consume significant mental and physical energy. 151
Combat Ability and Mental Resistance
David combines his immense physique with advanced combat judgment.
- His combat skill surpasses Batman’s, though Brainiac initially outclasses him in technical experience. 144
- He adapts tactics to opponents, using gravity to disrupt movement, psychological humiliation against Wolf, and divine lightning to force Amazo into constant evasion. 180 208
- He possesses exceptional resistance to mental manipulation; Steve Dayton’s mind-control helmet has no effect on him. 112
- By consuming cosmic energy, he can reinforce his mind against psychic assaults. 186
Six God Power
The dying Wizard Shazam passes the Six God Power and responsibility of protecting humanity to David.
- Grants divine lightning, increased physical strength, extreme speed, and heightened perception. 154
- Lets him overwhelm Sivana, the Seven Deadly Sins, and Black Adam shortly after inheriting it. 155 157
- Provides a Shazam transformation activated by the word “Shazam.” 154
- The Phoenix Force eventually begins rejecting this power from his body, prompting David to plan to pass it to Clark. 205
Hyperion Enhancements
The Hyperion template increases David’s already formidable Eternal traits.
- Improves his healing and regenerative capacity. 168 200
- Allows cosmic energy to enhance strength, durability, endurance, reactions, and mental power. 186
- Enables controlled enlargement by absorbing surrounding mass, drastically increasing physical power. 182 186
Phoenix Force and Sian’s Powers
David’s fifth template grants the Phoenix Force without its usual independent sentience.
- His left-hand energy can disintegrate trees, stone, and matter into atoms. 204
- His orange energy can freeze targets in an amber-like state between life and death. 204 208
- Phoenix fire amplifies his body, energy manipulation, gravity control, and other existing abilities. 205
- Telekinesis combined with gravity manipulation lets him briefly stop the Moon’s orbit. 205
- The Phoenix Force grants extreme regenerative immortality; David survives and kills the Black Racer, an embodiment of death. 213
- He uses Phoenix power to injure Darkseid and disintegrate his body despite the Omega Force’s resistance. 213
Omega Force
After defeating Darkseid, David absorbs the Omega Force.
- Uses the absorbed force to annihilate Granny Goodness, the Furies, and the Parademon armies on Earth. 213
- States that he would use the Anti-Life Equation for protection rather than universal rule if he acquires it. 213
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Green Lantern Ring — Grants protective constructs and versatile energy-based functions; David uses it in battle and for psychological warfare against Wolf. 127 180
- Mother Box — Removed from Themyscira after David discovers it is communicating with Apokolips. 146
- Trident — Wielded against Orm during the struggle for Atlantis, overpowering the opposing Trident of Poseidon in a direct clash. 125
Relationships
- Clark Kent / Superman — Adoptive brother and David’s primary family concern. They differ sharply on killing and superhero work but repeatedly fight together against global threats. 12 111 173
- Martha Kent — Adoptive mother; David’s desire to protect her is a major motive behind his hostility toward threats to the Kent family. 2 12
- Jonathan Kent — Adoptive father; David later encourages him to run for President and considers using the Wishing Stone to aid his campaign. 205 209
- Diana Prince / Wonder Woman — Initially David’s opponent during his conquest of the Amazons; later a battlefield ally who assists in subduing Black Adam. 83 92 157
- Hippolyta — Amazon queen who accepts David as king after he proves that he killed Ares. 85 96
- Kara — First observes David’s energy powers and mistakes him for the savior “Nama” of her tribe’s prophecy; later helps David and Clark relocate a supervolcano. 44 173
- Bruce Wayne / Batman — David exposes Bruce’s Batman identity, later becomes one of the League’s strongest crisis-response members, and is repeatedly approached by Batman for aid. 51 151 207
- Lex Luthor — A recurring adversary David suspects of orchestrating the military’s actions against Clark; David ultimately kills Luthor after exposing his clone scheme. 111 208 209
- Darkseid — Apokoliptian conqueror defeated by David in their final battle; David absorbs his Omega Force. 209 213
