Next best was for the Akatsuki members to kill all three Konoha members, or for the Konoha Ninja to kill the Akatsuki members. The worst result was that neither side could do anything to the other and both emerged without much loss.
As for an opportunity for S.H.I.E.L.D. to intervene, after thinking it through, Nick Fury felt this was not a good time.
