Background / History

Yorii was the second son of the Yorii family during the Warring States period of Fusang. Born with extraordinary swordsmanship, the Markings, Clear World, and Breathing Techniques, he later created Sun Breathing; no one else could endure its full power, forcing the Demon Slayer Corps to develop weaker branch styles instead. 1 7

Near the end of his first life, Yorii encountered his elder brother, Yorii Genkatsu, after he had become a demon. Yorii attempted a final strike but hesitated just before the blade reached Genkatsu's neck. After dying naturally, he relived his life in a void and concluded that he had failed to accomplish anything worthy of his gifts. 1

He then awoke physically restored to adolescence in the Imperial Capital. Initially unaware that he had entered another world, he resolved to find and destroy the root of demons, beginning a second life alongside Sayo and Ieyasu. 1 2

Appearance

Yorii commonly reappears in a youthful body that looks approximately fifteen or sixteen years old, despite retaining memories and experience from multiple long lives. His gentle expression and refined appearance contrast sharply with the ancient, detached quality of his eyes. 2 3 28

  • Black, glossy hair after each rejuvenation; his hair later matures and develops silver strands during long lifetimes. 2 117
  • Flame-like red Markings on his forehead and face. 4 42
  • Often carries a Nichirin Blade at his waist. 3 126
  • His serious combat presence is likened to a blazing, ferocious god, radically unlike his usual quiet demeanor. 7
  • His facial markings and stern bearing are frequently mistaken for signs that he belongs to a gang in modern Tokyo. 126 127

Personality

Yorii begins his second life burdened by regret and convinced that he squandered his natural gifts. His driving purpose is therefore simple: to do something meaningful, particularly by eradicating demons and protecting others. 1 2

Despite overwhelming strength, Yorii is humble, gentle, and uncomfortable with praise, ceremony, or using violence without cause. He asks challengers why they wield a sword and does not judge people solely by reputation, faction, or appearance. 3 25 108 212

His long life has made him detached and world-weary, but companionship gradually changes him. Through Sayo, Ieyasu, Tatsumi, Kagome, and others, he becomes more capable of expressing care, creating a home, and valuing ordinary peace. 73 105 135 176

Abilities & Skills

Sun Breathing and Swordsmanship

Yorii created Sun Breathing from his innate understanding of Breathing Techniques. His swordsmanship is consistently portrayed as far beyond ordinary fighters, Imperial Arms users, yokai, and large-scale monster threats. 7 52 197 222

  • Can casually overwhelm Ieyasu in sparring despite their similar apparent ages. 3
  • Uses named Sun Breathing forms, including Clear Blue Sky, Rays of Morning Sun, and Passing Sunshine. 85
  • Trains his thirteenth form to increase its number of slashes and deny a demon king any chance to escape. 35
  • Defeated Esdeath decisively and produced a massive scar across the battlefield with a single serious strike. 54 98
  • Annihilated thousands of yokai with one strike when they attempted to overwhelm him through numbers. 197
  • Sun Breathing cannot be taught in its complete form to ordinary people; Yorii instead teaches weakened branch Breathing Techniques. 7

Clear World

Yorii's Clear World grants extraordinary perception of bodies, movement, energy, and injuries. 1 65 210

  • Detects Kurome's internal injuries and declining physical condition. 65
  • Distinguishes demonic aura from surrounding energies and tracks hidden enemies through traces of ki. 122 160
  • Diagnoses Kogetsu Tendo's kidney condition without instruments. 210
  • Supports his exceptional observation and memory; he can retain minor details after seeing them once. 17

Qi and Spiritual Power

Through the Imperial Fists Temple and later Miko teachings, Yorii expands beyond close-range Breathing Techniques into Qi and spiritual-power cultivation. 80 125 132

  • Qi extends his lifespan substantially, allowing him to live beyond one hundred and thirty years in his second life. 118
  • Can project a violent spiritual-energy aura capable of lifting stones and forcing nearby opponents away. 132
  • Can infuse his sword with spiritual power. 132
  • Uses spiritual energy to construct large-scale protective barriers. 208 230

Magic

In Lugunica, Yorii demonstrates rare aptitude for magic despite treating it primarily as knowledge to explore rather than a means to gain strength. 295 297

  • Activates the Forbidden Library's gate independently. 297
  • Absorbs Yang-attribute Mana, an unusually rare magical affinity. 297
  • Uses Space Magic to retrieve a large quantity of gold bars. 310

Rejuvenation and Reincarnation

After dying naturally, Yorii's consciousness persists in a void before he is transported to another world in a restored youthful body. The process occurs repeatedly and is not presented as an ability he consciously controls. 1 118 202 253
