Background / History
The Emperor is an immortal Perpetual and humanity's most powerful Psyker. In ancient Rome, he foresaw both humanity's eventual destruction and his own ascent to the Golden Throne. Believing himself the only being capable of saving mankind, he abandoned his former life and began humanity's final self-salvation. 743
He launched the Great Crusade and founded the Imperium, but later withdrew beneath the Imperial Palace to pursue the Webway project. The project was ruined by rebellion and Chaos interference; he was grievously wounded and bound to the Golden Throne, where he endured for ten thousand years while holding back the tides of the Warp. 533 725
His long imprisonment left him burdened by faith, physical agony, and the threat of becoming the Dark King. Ron's emergence as the Savior gave him an unforeseen chance to alter humanity's fate, leading the Emperor to support Ron's reforms and eventually transfer the Imperium's rule to him. 743 529
Appearance
The Emperor's form varies according to his state, projection, and the condition of his throne-bound body. Witnesses have perceived him as a winged figure, a golden sun, or a tall warrior in golden armor. 340
- Often appears in sacred Golden Armor, with a cloak, claws, and other ornaments intended to project majesty and intimidation. 592
- During his long confinement, his physical form is a withered, damaged skeleton seated upon the Golden Throne. 741 776
- He temporarily awakens through a Clone Body, wielding a blazing golden Emperor's Sword. 529
- During his Dark King transformation, black flesh grows over his enlarged skeleton and radiates violent, dark vitality. 832
- After the Dark King is suppressed, he condenses a temporary body from Psyker Power and bone dust. 856
- In later years, he is described as aged, with gray temples and wrinkles. 1056
Personality
The Emperor is a pragmatist devoted above all to humanity's survival. He has used faith, political authority, and even deception when he considered them necessary to secure humanity's future, despite personally rejecting the idea that he is a god. 743 838
His relationship with his Primarch sons is deeply strained. He is capable of care, regret, and sincere apology, but his different personas can also be harsh, tyrannical, or violently reactive. His remorse over past failures becomes especially pronounced after Ron proves himself capable of guiding humanity more effectively. 741 743 838
Freed from the Golden Throne's constant agony, he regains much of his earlier humanity: he enjoys the Spirit Net, argues on forums under an anonymous account, and embraces retirement travel. 533 858

Story Role / Major Arcs
Awakening and the Black Throne
When Ron is unable to continue operating the Black Throne, the Emperor agrees to replace him and transfers his soul-consciousness into the Clone Body. The awakening exposes him to a Chaos assassination attempt while he is constrained by the throne. 525 526
He rises from the Black Throne, destroys the Lord of Pleasure's Chaos Assassin, and declares that he is not a god, but proof of the Chaos Gods' annihilation. 528
Transfer of Imperial Rule
After reviving in the Clone Body, the Emperor expels Chaos incarnations, seals the Veil Rifts, and personally crowns Ron as the new ruler of the Imperium. He entrusts humanity's future to the Savior rather than reclaiming absolute political power for himself. 529
He later agrees that Ron should govern independently, offering blessings in the Savior's image to redirect faith away from the Holy Sun and reduce his own risk of godhood. 533
Dark King Crisis
The Golden Throne's deterioration drives the Emperor toward transformation into the Dark King. His runaway power clashes with Ron's Mechanical Throne, and he admits that he may be becoming a god before Ron persuades him to reaffirm his humanity. 742 743
His dark persona manifests as the Dark Emperor and leads the Dark Legion of the Damned against the Light of Shadow. Though his presence forces Primarchs to kneel in fear, Ron ultimately restrains the Dark King rather than destroying him. 833 834 838
Release and Retirement
After the Dark King is defeated with the Light of Shadow, the Emperor's faith burden is lifted and he temporarily condenses a body from Psyker Power and bone dust. 856

Chief Scientist and Return to War
