Background / History
Vulpix has been with Qiao Ran since birth, having never left his side. Their long familiarity gives them unusually strong battle synchronization, allowing them to coordinate even when Qiao Ran gives few or no audible commands 5 8.
After Qiao Ran activates the Pokémon breeding system, Vulpix is anthropomorphized into a humanoid girl. Qiao Ran can will her between humanoid and fox forms, though she can eventually control the transformation herself 2. Initially unable to speak human language and unfamiliar with human etiquette, she receives language and manners lessons from Qiao Ran and Dianxi 6.
Vulpix later learns to speak, though her pronunciation remains imperfect; she notably calls Qiao Ran “Master Pig” instead of “Master” and struggles to replace “Master” with “Gege” 11 12 19. Her training and new clothes gradually make her more composed and self-conscious than she was at the beginning 11.
Appearance
In fox form, Vulpix is a small, snow-white Alolan Vulpix with six tails and soft fur. Her humanoid form is a petite girl with long blue-and-white or ice-blue hair, generally dressed in simple dresses provided by Qiao Ran 6 10 11.
- Small, white-furred Ice-type fox form with six tails 30.
- Humanoid form resembles a young girl with long ice-blue hair 6.
- Initially wears one of Qiao Ran's shirts as an improvised dress 6.
- Later receives a white dress and wears a blue dress while traveling 10 11.
- Intense emotions can destabilize her humanoid form, causing fox ears and six tails to reappear; Rotom identifies this as a possible semi-humanized state 11.
Personality
Vulpix is childlike, curious, and deeply attached to Qiao Ran. She readily seeks physical closeness, often resting in his arms or leaning against him while sleeping 2 21. Her earliest behavior reflects a lack of understanding of human customs, but she gradually learns shame, etiquette, and restraint through Dianxi's guidance 2 6 11.
She is loyal and determined in battle. Despite exhaustion during the cruise competition, she insists on continuing to fight alongside Qiao Ran; after her loss to Mawile, she battles until she is knocked unconscious rather than surrendering 21 31. She also feels insecure beside Qiao Ran's legendary and rare Pokémon, viewing herself as comparatively ordinary and valuing her ability to be held by him 31.
Vulpix becomes increasingly aware of changes in her relationship with Qiao Ran as Dianxi and the others grow closer to him. She quietly observes these interactions with confusion and begins to fear being left out 23.
Abilities & Skills
Humanoid Transformation
Vulpix can transform between her Alolan Vulpix form and a humanoid form.
- Qiao Ran can trigger either form through thought, and Vulpix can learn to transform on her own 2.
- Her initial humanoid form cannot speak human language; she later learns speech through sustained teaching 6 11.
- Strong emotional fluctuations may trigger a semi-humanized state with visible ears and tails 11.
- Anthropomorphism increases intimacy with Qiao Ran, strengthening the bond-based potential of techniques such as Z-Moves and Mega Evolution 2.
Snow Cloak
Vulpix's Ability is Snow Cloak, which raises her evasion during snow or hail.
- Uses Hail to create conditions favorable to Snow Cloak 8 31.
- Becomes difficult to locate within snowfall, appearing and disappearing through the snow 8.
- Uses the concealment to ambush Dratini with Aurora Beam 8.
- The strategy is less effective against wide-area attacks such as Mawile's Iron Head Barrage 31.
Ice-Type Techniques
Vulpix specializes in Ice-type attacks and weather control.
- Aurora Beam — Defeats Chang Mengda's Mightyena and later deals super-effective damage to Long Jiangxue's Dratini 3 8.
- Powder Snow — Used for direct attacks, disrupting opponents, and striking Mawile's footing 6 13 31.
- Hail — Creates snowfall to activate Snow Cloak and support evasive tactics 8 31.
- Dig — Uses an underground tunnel to evade Eve's Jynx's ice-spike performance and emerge behind it for the winning attack 22.
Trainer Synchronization
Vulpix and Qiao Ran possess exceptional mutual understanding.
- Can enact strategies with minimal visible command input, including activating Hail during the Longjiang Gym battle 8.
- Their shared synchronization allows Vulpix to narrowly evade repeated attacks from stronger opponents 8 13.
- The connection also burdens Qiao Ran: while fighting alongside her against Mawile, he feels her despair and pain as she is overwhelmed 31.
Equipment / Items
- Poké Ball — Used by Qiao Ran to deploy and recall her during battles 9.
- Clothing — First wears Qiao Ran's shirt, then receives a white dress and other outfits suitable for her humanoid form 6 10 11.
- Ice Stone — Obtained as the cruise competition prize; it can evolve Vulpix, but she declines to use it 22 31.
Relationships
- Qiao Ran — Her trainer and lifelong companion. She has been with him since birth, trusts his commands completely, and strongly values being held in his arms 5 21 31.
- Dianxi — Teammate and etiquette teacher. Dianxi helps teach Vulpix language and manners, though the two also experience jealousy over Qiao Ran's attention 6 11 22.
- Suicune — Teammate. Vulpix admires Suicune's legendary power and later supports her humanization alongside Dianxi 11 50.
- Rotom Phone — System companion that explains Vulpix's anthropomorphism and analyzes her unstable semi-humanized state 2 11.
- Long Jiangxue — Gym opponent whose Dratini Vulpix defeats in the Young Beast Battle 8 9.
- Eve — Cruise-ship tournament opponent. Vulpix defeats Eve's Jynx through a surprise Dig tactic, earning mutual respect between the trainers 22.
- Iron Maiden — Jinling Gym opponent. Vulpix is defeated by Iron Maiden's Mawile after attempting a weather-and-evasion strategy 31.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Battles
Vulpix wins Qiao Ran's first school battle by finishing Chang Mengda's Mightyena with Aurora Beam, but is then defeated by Chang's Garchomp 3. She continues to help Qiao Ran win his class Adventurer Battle qualification and reaches Level 16 5.
Longjiang Gym Challenge
In the Young Beast Battle, Vulpix faces Long Jiangxue's Dratini. She uses Hail and Snow Cloak to evade Flamethrower, then strikes from concealment with Aurora Beam to secure victory and reach Level 22 8 9.
Cruise Ship Tournament
Vulpix carries Qiao Ran through a morning of tournament battles despite mounting fatigue. In the final, she defeats Eve's Jynx by digging beneath Jynx's ice-spike assault and attacking from behind, earning Qiao Ran the Mysterious Evolution Stone later identified as an Ice Stone 21 22 31.
Eve Rescue
Qiao Ran selects Vulpix to accompany him in the pursuit of Eve's kidnappers at sea. She assists Suicune and the newly summoned Shiny Altaria during the rescue operation, using Powder Snow against the kidnappers 23 24 25.
Jinling Gym Challenge
Vulpix is sent out against Iron Maiden's Mawile despite both a level disadvantage and an unfavorable Ice-versus-Steel matchup. She considers evolving with the Ice Stone, but Qiao Ran explains that evolution would make her four times weak to Steel-type attacks; she remains unevolved and is ultimately defeated by Mawile's Iron Head Barrage 30 31.
Ultra Beast Incident
While exploring the singularity connected to the Aether Foundation, Vulpix is weakened by the oppressive aura affecting non-legendary Pokémon. Qiao Ran carries her for reassurance, and she later joins Dianxi, Suicune, and Altaria in the effort against the black Nihilego and its swarm 38 42.
Trivia
- Vulpix is Qiao Ran's original expected starter Pokémon, though her humanoid form initially shocks him 1 2.
- She is over a year old and is considered a “true young beast” during the Longjiang Gym's Young Beast Battle 8.
- She initially has no concept of human etiquette or embarrassment, but develops a sense of shame after Dianxi's training 2 11.
- Her refusal to evolve is partly motivated by her fear that a larger evolved body would prevent Qiao Ran from holding her as he does now 31.
