Background

Chen Fan was a private detective on Earth before a car accident led to his transmigration into the body of another Chen Fan, a Varrela native who had died after taking sleeping pills. The original body had recently become a God Chosen and was scheduled to undergo the God Chosen Ceremony within a month—a process from which no participant was known to return. 1 3

He initially concealed his transmigration from Mother Chen, imitating local prayer customs while privately treating the speaking God Statue and the civilization's religious practices as deeply suspicious. When his mother sensed that he had “become a different person,” he avoided a self-defeating explanation by redirecting her concern toward the God Statue. 1 9

A damaged mechanical arm later crossed into Varrela through an apparent inter-universal jump, recognized Chen Fan as its target signal source, and became One, his Intelligent Terminal.
