Background / History

Natsu was taught Fire Dragon Slayer Magic by Igneel, whom he regards as his father. Anna taught him and the other Dragon Slayers their culture and knowledge; she also made his scarf from Igneel's scales. Feng Lan gave him the title “Fire Dragon,” which Natsu himself did not initially use. 1 25

As a child, Natsu joined Gajeel, Sting, Rogue, and Wendy in challenging a Fire Dragon shortly after they learned Dragon Slayer Magic. The group was overwhelmed, leaving Natsu fatally injured; Feng Lan arrived and fought the dragon for a day and night to protect them. Natsu subsequently acknowledged Feng Lan as an older brother. 8

Igneel disappeared on July 7, along with Slokard, Metalicana, Grandine, Skiadra, and Pershion. The disappearance remains one of Natsu's central motivations, alongside his drive to surpass Feng Lan and become strong enough to protect his companions. 1 79

Feng Lan later trained Natsu's physical conditioning, mental fortitude, and control over Dragon Slayer Magic. During this period, Natsu began fusing water-attribute magic power into himself, though he initially misunderstood the process and tried to gain it by drinking ordinary lake water. 10 18 19

Natsu was promoted to Fairy Tail's S-Class alongside Mirajane after enduring Feng Lan's Water Dragon King techniques in their promotion spar. 73

He is fiercely protective of his companions, particularly Lisanna. His refusal to abandon her during the Lightning Dragon battle directly triggers his Dragon Force awakening, and he later accepts unknown power rather than let the Beast King kill his friends. 79 97

Although blunt and competitive, Natsu can show compassion after a victory. After defeating Cobra and Cubellios, he refuses to kill them and instead tells Cobra to care properly for his partner. 148
