Ch. 364Monkey D. Dragon

Carlos and Monkey D. Dragon met at Vegapunk’s research base, where both intended to recruit the scientist and feared the consequences if the World Government learned of it. After agreeing to compete for Vegapunk and discussing possible cooperation, they unleashed their Conqueror’s Haki against each other, leaving the desert battered by storms.

  • Carlos destroyed the research base’s hidden surveillance devices and spotted Monkey D. Dragon approaching.
  • Carlos and Dragon admitted they had both come for Vegapunk and agreed to remove the other people at the base before competing to persuade him, while leaving the other researchers unharmed.
  • Dragon offered to build relations with Carlos and argued that the Revolutionary Army could ignite the world’s accumulated resentment against the World Government.
  • Carlos said he would invest in the Revolutionary Army if he obtained Vegapunk, but warned that either side could attack him if it had the strength.
  • Carlos released his Conqueror’s Haki, and Dragon answered with his own, as their clash stirred dark clouds, fierce winds, and spreading sandstorms.

Ch. 365Intervention, Number Nine

Carlos and Dragon attacked Vegapunk’s underground research base, each trying to secure him while eliminating the people around him. Number Nine intercepted Carlos, who blasted him away, while Dragon slaughtered the base’s defenders.

  • Carlos used Planetary Devastation while Dragon summoned tornadoes, stripping away the desert and exposing the underground research base.
  • Carlos sent the enormous sphere of sand and rock crashing toward Vegapunk as Dragon agreed to deal with the other people in the base.
  • Number Nine ordered the other eight agents to evacuate Vegapunk and stayed behind to destroy the falling sphere with successive sword slashes.
  • Number Nine attacked Carlos with his short blade, but Carlos used Shinra Tensei to blast him through a building.
  • Dragon fought through the base with wind and Dragon Claw Fist, killing the people he encountered while Vegapunk was being escorted away.

Ch. 366Talent Is Hard to Come By

Carlos ordered the Six Paths of Pain to retrieve Vegapunk and kill the witnesses while he delayed Number Nine. After deciding to recruit Number Nine, Carlos planned to defeat him and use Illusion Techniques to break the World Government’s brainwashing.

  • Carlos summoned Deva Path Pain, Animal Path Pain, and Asura Path Pain, ordering two to retrieve Vegapunk and the other to eliminate everyone except the scientists.
  • Number Nine escaped the rubble and pursued Deva Path Pain and Asura Path Pain, but Carlos slowed him with Banshō Ten'in and attacked with Laser Beams.
  • Number Nine broke free and unleashed blade attacks, but Carlos used Kamui to avoid harm and then pursued him when he tried to leave.
  • Carlos intercepted Number Nine at the research base and offered him a place in the Divine Eye Pirates.
  • Carlos decided to defeat Number Nine, take him into the Kamui Space, and use Illusion Techniques and hypnosis to make him loyal.

Ch. 367Vegapunk

Carlos defeated Number Nine and helped Dragon free Vegapunk. Afterward, Carlos, Dragon, and Vegapunk celebrated together, while Carlos considered the wealth, connections, and Rumble-Rumble Fruit that could persuade Vegapunk to join him.

  • Carlos lured Number Nine into range of three Limbo: Border Jail attacks, then restrained him with Kamui and burned him with Amaterasu before placing him in Kamui Space.
  • Carlos waited with wine until the fighting stopped and Asura Path Pain, Deva Path Pain, Dragon, and Vegapunk returned.
  • Carlos congratulated Vegapunk on regaining his freedom and invited him and Dragon to drink with him.
  • Carlos reasoned that his wealth, connections, and the Rumble-Rumble Fruit gave him advantages over Dragon in recruiting Vegapunk.

Ch. 368Joining Up

Carlos and Dragon competed to recruit Vegapunk, but Carlos won by offering him unlimited funding and the chance to wield the Rumble-Rumble Fruit. Vegapunk joined Carlos, and Dragon departed after declining Carlos’s challenge to fight.

  • Dragon offered Vegapunk equal status to himself, full research support, and a place in the Revolutionary Army.
  • Carlos offered Vegapunk status second only to his own, unlimited funding, and the chance to gain the Rumble-Rumble Fruit’s power.
  • Vegapunk chose to follow Carlos and promised to help the Revolutionary Army with research when needed.
  • Dragon accepted Vegapunk’s decision and left with the other scientists.
  • Carlos challenged Dragon to fight, but Dragon declined and said he would return when confident.

Ch. 369The Might of Pluton

Carlos brought Vegapunk to witness the Ancient Weapon Pluton fused into Asura Path Pain, then demonstrated its power by obliterating the island. They left for Sun Moon Island, where Carlos arranged a secret place for Vegapunk and began building a research base.

  • Carlos welcomed Vegapunk aboard and promised to show him a great treasure once Dragon had gone.
  • Carlos took Vegapunk outside the island and revealed that he had fused Pluton into Asura Path Pain using its abilities and the Fusion Fruit.
  • Carlos ordered Asura Path Pain to fire Pluton's cannon, erasing the island and everything on it.
  • Carlos and Vegapunk left for Sun Moon Island after Asura Path Pain returned to its normal form.
  • Carlos disguised Vegapunk and settled him in a top-secret location while construction began on a research base.

Ch. 370Ambition

The World Government blamed the Revolutionary Army for Vegapunk’s disappearance after Dragon escaped with several scientists, while Carlos continued building the Divine Eye Pirates’ power in secret. By Oceanic Era 1509, Carlos was preparing to challenge Whitebeard and bring the Shichibukai fully under his command.

  • The World Government investigated Vegapunk’s vanished island, found it had been erased by a terrifying power, and traced a suspicious ship used by Dragon’s group.
  • Dragon evaded the World Government’s pursuit by switching ships and deliberately left clues implicating the Revolutionary Army, which then went into hiding as the World Government intensified its crackdown.
  • Carlos oversaw a research base on Sun Moon Island, tried to make Number Nine forget the World Government, and asked Vegapunk to develop medicine to enhance his stamina.
  • Carlos developed his influence across the seas while the United States of Night led a West Sea alliance that reduced exploitation of its member kingdoms.
  • Doflamingo and the other Shichibukai agreed to follow Carlos but pursued their own interests, so Carlos planned to challenge Whitebeard and establish his authority over them.

Ch. 371A Challenge Issued

After completing the Death Divine Eye, Carlos challenged Whitebeard to a fight scheduled for the end of the month. The challenge drew forces from across the world toward the New World to witness the battle.

  • Carlos completed his Death Divine Eye and emerged from secluded training at Sun Moon Palace.
  • Carlos ordered a guard to have Kelly deliver Whitebeard a challenge for a battle in half a month.
  • Whitebeard accepted the challenge, and both pirate crews announced the coming fight.
  • People across the world debated who would win, with many experienced figures believing Carlos had the advantage.
  • Pirates, Marines, government agents, the Revolutionary Army, and reporters headed for the New World to witness the battle.

Ch. 372Desolate Island

Carlos and the Divine Eye Pirates sailed from Sun Moon Island to Desolate Island to meet Whitebeard for their agreed battle. Carlos explained that he wanted to claim the title of strongest man in the world, and the fleet arrived near the dangerous island where they would fight.

  • Carlos led Vegapunk and the Divine Eye Pirates’ core crew aboard the Underworld Moon as eleven warships departed Sun Moon Island.
  • Vegapunk asked why Carlos had chosen to challenge Whitebeard, and Carlos said he wanted to become the strongest man in the world in strength as well as reputation.
  • Carlos rested to prepare for the battle while his crewmates waited quietly around him.
  • Near noon, the Divine Eye Pirates fleet approached Desolate Island, a perilous land filled with ancient creatures that even many Vice Admiral-level fighters could not survive.

Ch. 373Carlos VS Whitebeard (Part 1)

Carlos and Whitebeard began their anticipated battle on the Desolate Island before an enormous crowd of pirates, Marines, rulers, and reporters. Carlos effortlessly neutralized Whitebeard’s opening blow, while their powers devastated the island around them.

  • Pirate crews, Marines, World Government agents, kingdoms, underworld powers, and reporters gathered around the Desolate Island to witness the battle.
  • Carlos arrived with the Divine Eye Pirates as Whitebeard came with his fleet of fifteen ships, and the spectators stopped fighting to watch.
  • Carlos and Whitebeard left their crews, landed on the island, and charged at each other without speaking.
  • Whitebeard unleashed a Tremor-Tremor Fruit slash that shattered the atmosphere and sent destructive force toward Carlos.
  • Carlos used Deathly Still Light to weaken Whitebeard’s attack until it reached him as a harmless breeze.
  • Their attacks ravaged the forest, killing beasts and draining the life from creatures and even decaying stones.

Ch. 374Carlos VS Whitebeard (Part 2)

Carlos and Whitebeard fought at full strength, but Carlos used Kamui Space to evade Whitebeard’s attacks and withstand his earthquakes. The battle continued on the ruined island, with Whitebeard frustrated by Carlos’s seemingly untouchable ability.

  • Carlos shifted into Kamui Space to let Whitebeard’s naginata pass through him, then struck at Whitebeard with an Armament Haki-coated elbow that Whitebeard blocked with his weapon.
  • Whitebeard and Carlos clashed their Conqueror’s Haki, unleashing black-red lightning and winds that destroyed the forest as spectators watched the broadcast.
  • Whitebeard withdrew his Haki and smashed both fists into the ground, sending all-direction tremors through Carlos’s position and tearing part of the island away.
  • Carlos remained in the earthquake zone by using Kamui Space to evade Whitebeard’s attacks, while Whitebeard’s slashes repeatedly passed through him.
  • Whitebeard cursed Carlos’s spatial ability, and spectators watching the battle also reacted with frustration at how difficult Carlos was to hurt.

Ch. 375Carlos vs. Whitebeard (Part 2)

Carlos and Whitebeard fought an evenly matched close-range battle until Carlos used Izanagi to bait Whitebeard into a devastating attack. After reversing the damage, Carlos appeared behind Whitebeard and wounded him with deathly claws, leaving the fight unresolved.

  • Carlos and Whitebeard exchanged hundreds of close-combat moves without either gaining the advantage.
  • Carlos decided not to kill Whitebeard but planned to risk an opening to defeat or injure him.
  • Carlos sacrificed one Three-Tomoe Sharingan to activate Izanagi and deliberately stumbled to expose an opening.
  • Whitebeard struck Carlos with two fully charged vibration blows, rupturing his internal organs.
  • Carlos used Izanagi to restore himself and vanish with the bloody mist, then appeared behind Whitebeard and tore into his back with deathly claws.

Ch. 376Carlos VS Whitebeard (Part 2)

Carlos used the Death Divine Eye’s curse to overwhelm Whitebeard and leave him badly weakened after their fight on Desolate Island. Whitebeard lay battered in a crater as Carlos’s victory became effectively certain.

  • Whitebeard’s elbow shattered the air and brought down a mountain peak, which crashed into the battlefield and sank part of Desolate Island.
  • Whitebeard tried to end the fight quickly, but Carlos cast Death Curse through the death power already invading his back.
  • The curse burdened Whitebeard with numerous ailments and accelerated the loss of his stamina and vitality.
  • Carlos dodged Whitebeard’s impaired attacks, then struck him with a Haki-coated combo that sent him through a boulder and into a crater.

Ch. 377The Finale

Carlos defeated Whitebeard, released the curse, and returned to Sun Moon Island as news spread of his rise to world-power status. With the battle behind him, he planned to seek Pure Gold and the Op-Op Fruit, pursue Momousagi, and build an even brighter future.

  • Carlos lifted the Death Curse, and Whitebeard admitted defeat before leaving with his fighting spirit renewed.
  • Carlos returned to the Dark Moon and ordered his fleet back to Sun Moon Island as the other factions departed.
  • News agencies reported the battle, making Carlos and the Divine Eye Pirates famous around the world.
  • The World Government, Pirates, Revolutionary Army, and other factions began treating Carlos as a major world power.
  • Carlos planned to search for Pure Gold and the Op-Op Fruit, pursue Momousagi, and gather beautiful women into a harem.
