Background / History

Poison Treatment and Romance

Dugu Yan suffered from Bipilin Snake Poison that erupted every night. To secure treatment for both himself and his granddaughter, Dugu Bo surrendered the entire Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well to Dai Weisi, who also promised to strengthen her martial soul. Dugu Yan initially knew nothing of their bargain 42 43.

The prolonged interconnection of their Soul Power during treatment reduced the unfamiliarity between them. Grateful for her cure and attracted to her rescuer, Dugu Yan embraced Dai Weisi, kissed his neck, and gently bit his skin with her small fangs. His hesitation concerned Zhu Zhuyun, his fiancée back in Star Luo 43.

She subsequently persuaded him to attend the lantern festival. During a Spirit Hall assassination attempt, she protected him and suffered a penetrating wound through the heart. Dai Weisi’s available cards could not save her; a Jade Maiden Heart Swordplay couple’s card appeared with the requirement that its users live and die together with perfectly united hearts. Her survival is confirmed afterward 44 47 49.

City of Slaughter and Return to Star Luo

Dugu Yan insisted on accompanying Dai Weisi into the City of Slaughter despite Dugu Bo’s objections. Their joint sword-qi demonstration persuaded her grandfather to relent. Their connection also helped preserve her mental stability without drinking Bloody Mary 54.

On Hell Road, she used the Ancient Tomb Sect’s lightness technique and Dai Weisi’s body as support to climb the nearly vertical final cliff. A subsequent soul-ring absorption further strengthened her martial soul 62 63.

Three years after their last meeting, she felt Dai Weisi’s suffering during his sword’s heavenly tribulation through their heart-linked bond. Unable to remain at ease, she persuaded Dugu Bo to take her to Star Luo City. Dai Weisi welcomed her personally and presented the Green Snake Pearl Sword 89 90.

Her first meeting with Zhu Zhuyun was tense: both immediately regarded the other as a natural enemy. Nevertheless, Dugu Yan avoided an immediate confrontation, while Zhu Zhuyun received her as the household’s principal wife 90.

Sea God’s Inheritance

Dugu Yan’s developing aquatic affinity made her unusually comfortable fighting underwater. She participated in the Demon King Team’s battles on Sea God Island, where her gaze and poisonous light twice forced Sea Dragon Douluo into a passive position 111 117 118.

She completed the Sea God’s Eighth Trial by forcibly lifting the Sea God Trident with her Martial Soul Avatar. The Vast Sea Cosmic Shroud then returned to the weapon as its energy core. Bo Saixi granted her the Ninth Trial: defeat Bo Saixi alone within five years 128.

Dai Weisi proposed an alternative to Bo Saixi’s required sacrifice. The Sea God accepted that Bo Saixi could be spared if Dugu Yan conquered the ocean and restored its order within one hundred years. Companions could assist that campaign, but Dugu Yan had to remain its central force; they could not assist her duel against Bo Saixi 128.

Before leaving the island, Dugu Yan and Dai Weisi secured the Demon Soul Great White Shark clan’s submission. She then helped the returning fleet sail at full speed by controlling the wind with the trident. Dai Weisi arranged for her to command the Star Luo Navy to develop the leadership and sovereign bearing needed for her ocean campaign 129 130 132.

Independent Victories and Revenge

Dugu Yan refused Dai Weisi’s assistance against the Deep Sea Nine-Headed Serpent, treating the battle as the beginning of her conquest of the sea. She combined divine restraint, swordsmanship, Martial Soul Avatar, a soul-bone barrage, and blood poison to kill all nine heads before the beast could regenerate 133.

After reaching Titled Douluo, she gravely wounded the Nether Sea Octopus without using the Sea God Trident or its divine techniques. Zhu Zhuyun delivered the final blow and claimed its ring and soul bone 134.

Dugu Yan later took personal revenge on Ghost Douluo Gui Mei, the enemy responsible for nearly killing her. She allowed Ye Lingling to heal him first, then restrained his strongest attack with Unsettled Waves and pierced his skull with Blood Poison God-Slaying Spear 150 151.

Her attachment does not prevent her from seeking independence. She refuses assistance against the Deep Sea Nine-Headed Serpent and deliberately gives Gui Mei a chance to fight at full health before killing him. Both confrontations show her confidence in proving her strength personally 133 151.
