Lin Xiuran thought for a long time, yet still could not figure out who had saved him.
"That little girl is fine too."
Wu Zhangkong was naturally referring to Ouyang Zixin.
Lin Xiuran nodded. Ouyang Zixin's injuries had certainly been worse than his. Though Wu Zhangkong's words had been a little too brief, if he said she was fine, then she must be fine.
Besides, he should not be concerned with such matters anymore. As for Ouyang Zixin, he should not dwell on her any further. He would just consider their debts settled.
"Thank you, Teacher Wu."
Wu Zhangkong did not respond. He merely glanced at him before saying, "I'll go buy you something to eat."
After saying that, he paid Lin Xiuran no further attention and walked straight out the door.
Not long after Wu Zhangkong left, a nurse entered the room and gave Lin Xiuran a simple examination.
Apparently, Wu Zhangkong had arranged it before leaving.
The Nurse was a young woman. After finishing the examination, she quietly asked, "Little brother, who is that man to you? He seems so concerned about you."
Lin Xiuran was taken aback, but he still explained, "He's a teacher at our academy."
"A teacher." The Nurse nodded slightly, then said, "He's been taking care of you these past two days, running all over the place. He's really responsible."
As she said this, her eyes were practically sparkling. Clearly, she was another young girl completely charmed by Wu Zhangkong's looks.
Lin Xiuran naturally noticed it as well. With Wu Zhangkong's looks, he was undeniably the idol-type handsome man. Attracting girls was naturally easy for him.
But that was not what concerned him right now. What he had not expected was that Wu Zhangkong had personally taken care of him for two days.
Although the man had saved him, he could have simply notified Ye Yingluo. There had been no need for him to stay here himself for two days.
He was Zero Class's teacher and had to be busy every day. Moreover, given his personality, he did not seem like someone who would casually spend two days caring for a stranger.
"Oh, right. If you need anything, remember to have your teacher call for me more often." Before leaving, the Nurse earnestly reminded Lin Xiuran.
Lin Xiuran helplessly shook his head. Perhaps this was a kind of trouble for Wu Zhangkong as well.
Just as the Nurse stepped out, an unexpected visitor suddenly entered the room.
Lin Xiuran had thought Wu Zhangkong had returned, but when he saw who it was, his gaze immediately sharpened. "What? The covert approach didn't work, so you've come openly now? Xu Family Head!"
Xu Junwen was slightly stunned. Then he let out a soft sigh and merely explained, "The Clan Elder wants to see you."
"If the Clan Elder wants to see me, I will naturally pay him a visit. But Xu Family Head, please understand that the Clan Elder is your elder, after all. Don't think of using him to trick me into going somewhere again." Lin Xiuran showed no courtesy whatsoever. He truly had nothing to say to someone who had threatened his life.
Naturally, he had nothing to fear. If Xu Junwen wanted to make a move, he currently had no chance of resisting at all. But he understood Xu Junwen fairly well. Eastsea City was not a place where the Finance Minister could have the final say alone. Xu Junwen would not dare make a move here; he valued his position greatly.
Xu Junwen fell silent for a moment, meeting Lin Xiuran's stubborn gaze. Having held a high position for many years, he naturally possessed an unquestionable air of authority, enough to suppress any junior. Yet today, Lin Xiuran's steadfast gaze made his own presence seem weaker by several degrees.
He also seemed to realize his own mistake. Dragging the grudges of the previous generation onto the younger generation truly should not have happened. What was more, the other party had been his son for so many years.
At some point, Wu Zhangkong had already returned. He leaned quietly against the doorframe, his gaze scrutinizing Xu Junwen.
At that moment, Xu Junwen felt the extremely cold gaze behind him, sending a chill down his spine.
For some reason, Wu Zhangkong seemed to bear a measure of hostility toward Xu Junwen. His aura involuntarily pressed down on him.
Xu Junwen felt that pressure and knew he could not remain here any longer. Bracing himself, he said, "The Clan Elder is hospitalized here too."
"What happened to the Clan Elder?"
Lin Xiuran's expression changed instantly. He threw back the covers and tried to get out of bed, but such a large movement made his entire body feel as though it were about to fall apart.
He had suffered severe injuries to begin with, and he had only received treatment for two days. His body was still completely weak. Naturally, he could not endure such a drastic movement.
Wu Zhangkong had already come to his side. He said coldly, "Lie down."
His words allowed no doubt. Lin Xiuran had no choice. Even if he wanted to disobey, his body simply could not support it.
At that moment, the sound of wheels rolling came from the doorway. A burly man pushed the Clan Elder, who was seated in a wheelchair, into the room.
"Clan Elder, what happened to you?" Lin Xiuran was suddenly shocked. He had not expected that after only two days apart, the Clan Elder would be like this.
In his eyes, the Clan Elder had always been powerful. After all, he was the strongest fighter in the entire Xu Family. Yet after only two days, he was already sitting in a wheelchair.
"It's nothing worth mentioning, nothing worth mentioning. This old body of mine is simply like this." The Clan Elder shook his head, then turned his gaze toward Xu Junwen.
Xu Junwen understood and could only leave the room dejectedly.
The Clan Elder looked at Wu Zhangkong and said respectfully, "Could you please step aside for the moment as well?"
Wu Zhangkong gave the Clan Elder that courtesy. He merely glanced at Lin Xiuran before leaving the room too.
Only Lin Xiuran and the Clan Elder remained in the room.
The sunlight outside the window was still bright, and the Clan Elder wore a kindly smile.
"Child, you have suffered." The Clan Elder had only smiled after seeing that Lin Xiuran was all right, but seeing him injured now, his heart naturally ached again.
Lin Xiuran shook his head, a trace of sorrow surfacing in his eyes. How could he be happy after being treated like that? They had been father and son for so many years. No matter how biased the other man had been, Lin Xiuran had never expected him to resort to murder.
The Clan Elder helplessly shook his head and sighed. "Child, I'll be direct. You are not actually a child of the Xu Family. With your intelligence, you should have already guessed that."
"I guessed." Lin Xiuran gave a bitter smile. If he had truly been their biological child, how could there have been such favoritism? How could they have tried to kill him?
The Clan Elder gently stroked his long white beard and said reminiscently, "Today, I won't mention anything else first. I want to tell you a story—your mother's story."
"My mother?"
Lin Xiuran's gaze grew somewhat blank. The word felt unfamiliar to him. Xu Mother, who had once been his mother in name, had never shown him any concern. Naturally, there was no story between them.
Then this mother might be...
"Yes, your real mother." The Clan Elder nodded. As he spoke, his expression darkened slightly, as though some matters were difficult to say aloud.
"Speaking of which, it was our Xu Family that wronged your mother."
