Background

Before his present life, Yu Qi'an came from the upper realm and possessed the Big Dipper Star Disk. He intended to descend using a Treasure Gourd, but an encounter with Huan Nu and the arrival of heavenly patrol soldiers led to both of them falling into the mortal realm. Yu Qi'an gave Huan Nu the gourd and fell in his physical body, leaving him with fragmented memories. 572

During his first mortal life, he cultivated back to the Earthly Immortal realm. His divine calculation identified Ten Li Slope as the place where an immortal opportunity would descend. To prevent it from falling into non-human hands, he captured and suppressed the era's strongest demon, devil, ghost, and monster beneath the well at Virtuous Cloud Temple. 572

After waiting another ten years without obtaining the opportunity, Yu Qi'an came to regard it as a matter of fortune rather than something that could be seized. He lived a second life, but when the four imprisoned Evil Spirits tried to escape during his seclusion, he sealed away his original body and its cultivation beneath the well. His new body became incapable of cultivation. 572

In an earlier period of his life, Yu Qi'an came to Jiangnan from an ancient Daoist inheritance and stayed at Virtuous Cloud Temple, then the property of Guo Dang's family. The two became inseparable friends, traveled the jianghu together, climbed Broken Stele Mountain, and helped found Human Realm Fire before eventually parting ways. 396 458

Yu Qi'an later took in and raised the orphan Li Chu as his founding and final disciple. Although unable to cultivate in his present body, he guided Li Chu's growth at Virtuous Cloud Temple and remained a source of knowledge, connections, and strategy. 2 54 85 107

His pursuit of the seven Star Beads is tied to a larger mission: using them to suppress the Extraterrestrial Heavenly Demon. He was willing to abandon even this mission for Empress Mingyan, but she refused to let him do so. 502

Appearance

Yu Qi'an appears to be around fifty, yet shows little sign of aging. He habitually cultivates the image of an unworldly Daoist master, reinforced by his neat robes, composed posture, and cloud-like sideburns. 2

Yu Qi'an is outwardly calm, elegant, and unfathomable. He frequently answers difficult questions with a profound smile, allowing others to assume he possesses deeper secrets than he is willing to explain. 16 85

He is highly protective of Li Chu. Though he recognizes his disciple's righteousness, he warns others against trying to exploit him and makes clear that he will not tolerate schemes directed at Li Chu. 363

Yu Qi'an is also a shrewd manipulator. He prefers intimidation, misdirection, and negotiation over direct confrontation when his current lack of cultivation makes open combat impractical; after bluffing King Wan Shi through a chess match, he openly admitted that the display was meant to keep the opponent in check. 462 466

His flirtatiousness and shameless humor are longstanding traits, but he insists that sincerity matters in relationships. His view is that a person's words can be sincere when spoken even if that person later changes. 503
