Background

Wan Qingluan was a disciple of Jiang Hui and a member of the Extinction Sect, a sect whose teachings emphasize following one’s desires and ultimately annihilating human nature to become one with the Dao. She had no family and was later identified as the sect’s Holy Maiden. 8 41 57

Before reaching Grandmaster, her cultivation required her to temper her heart in the mortal world and seek her own path through different identities. This accounts for her appearances as, among other roles, a Sword Establishment Sect disciple and a Zhang Family servant girl. 11 18 20

She is skilled at reading expressions and demeanor, which lets her recognize contradictions in others’ behavior even without mind-reading. 20 62 Her curiosity toward He Yu begins because he appears unafraid of death while still possessing a strong will to live. 20

First Encounter and the Bounty Key

Wan Qingluan first confronts He Yu after he kills her junior sister. Though she questions whether to kill him, she accepts the Bounty Key he offers and leaves him the top-tier movement technique Phantom Phoenix Stride because she finds his movement skill lacking. 8

The five Bounty Keys were created by the Extinction Sect’s leader; gathering all of them allows the holder to summon the leader and have one wish granted. 8

Mortal-World Tempering

While living through different identities, Wan Qingluan repeatedly crosses paths with He Yu. Her curiosity grows because his reactions to danger appear contradictory to her: he fears pain and values survival, yet does not fear death itself. 11 18 20

During her Fear phase, she seeks refuge in He Yu’s home. Her successive personalities cause disorder, but she ultimately reveals that she is experiencing the role of an ordinary wife as part of her cultivation. 19 20

Separation and Reunions

After several years together, Wan Qingluan leaves to continue seeking her Grandmaster path. She leaves He Yu a thousand Inner Divinity Pills and a jade pendant identifying him as a core Extinction Sect member. 22
