Background / History

Artoria became Britain’s king after drawing the Sword of Selection. She was created through the plans of King Uther and Merlin and bore Britain’s fate from birth. Though Merlin warned her that Britain would eventually fall, she sought to prevent its ruin from becoming a catastrophic civil collapse. 26 31

Unable to accept Britain’s destruction despite giving everything to its protection, Artoria contracted to seek the Holy Grail as a Servant. Her wish was to return to before she drew Caliburn and choose a more suitable king for Britain. 33 35

During the Fourth Holy Grail War, she is summoned as Saber for the Einzbern faction. Irisviel von Einzbern initially acts as her proxy Master while Kiritsugu Emiya remains distant and unwilling to communicate directly with her. 6

Although she could follow Morgan and strike from behind after their withdrawal, Artoria refuses to ambush her sister. 8

Temporary Alliance

Separated from Kiritsugu, Artoria accepts Xi Jianxi’s offer to temporarily travel with him and Morgan. Their alliance initially focuses on countering Lancer and avoiding interference from other factions. 12 14

She later joins Xi Jianxi in confronting Caster, prioritizing the rescue of a surviving child over an immediate killing blow. 15 16

Caster Suppression

Artoria protects Xi Jianxi while he prepares Wild Thunder, holding off Caster’s Sea Monsters for a full minute. Lancer eventually joins them, and Xi Jianxi’s spell devastates Caster’s summoned forces. 16 17

She later fights beside Xi Jianxi and Iskandar against Caster’s massive Sea Monster at the Miyuen River, then retreats so Morgan can deploy Roadless Camelot. 27 28

Confronting the Grail and Lost Will

Morgan explains that the Greater Holy Grail has been contaminated and that using it could create extreme consequences. Artoria is shaken by the revelation, particularly because a wish to save Britain could endanger the world. 31
