Doflamingo gave the Straw Hat Crew access to the full Illusion Space and put them through months of near-real combat training in a single night. They emerged much stronger, with Luffy unexpectedly using Conqueror's Haki Infusion, and found Nico Robin sitting atop a tall mechanical figure.
Robin gave the Straw Hat Crew Franky Grand General as a shipwright, Navigator, and bodyguard, while Doflamingo quietly nurtured the Going Merry’s developing Ship Spirit. After sensing a powerful stranger approaching Alabasta, Doflamingo headed into the desert to keep a possible battle away from the port.
Doflamingo met Navy Admiral Issho after misleading the blind man toward him in the Alabasta desert. Issho explained that he had come to judge Doflamingo for himself, and the two traveled together toward the Golden City.
The Straw Hat Crew fought Sand Crocodile and CP9 over Nico Robin in Water 7, then lost the Going Merry and gained a new Ship Spirit aboard the Thousand Sunny. Meanwhile, Doflamingo discovered that Space Pirates had arrived on the moon and went to inspect them.
Doflamingo learned from the Space Pirates that the universe held no powers far beyond the Blue Sea, while uncovering clues that Imu may have been an ancient spacefaring overlord behind the Cosmic Storm and the planet’s former single continent. Meanwhile, the Straw Hat Crew defeated CP9 in the Misty Sea Area, where Doflamingo reclaimed the Soul Fragments he had lent the agents.
The Straw Hat Crew was overwhelmed by Gecko Moria, Sand Crocodile, Perona, and their forces on Thriller Bark, with several crew members losing their shadows and being imprisoned. Usopp proved immune to Perona’s Negative Hollows and used his tools to free the crew and carry them out of the dungeon.
The Straw Hat Crew freed Brook and the other shadowless prisoners, then joined forces with the Shichibukai to defeat the zombie army. After reclaiming Soul Fragments from Gecko Moria and Sand Crocodile, Doflamingo confronted three of Moria’s associates and demanded they come with him.
Doflamingo spared Gecko Moria’s three subordinates and sent them to Alabasta, while Joker engineered a crisis for the Straw Hat Crew at Sabaody by arranging the deaths of more than a dozen Celestial Dragons. The Navy cornered the crew with two Admirals, but Joker intervened with a massive shockwave, leaving the battle’s outcome unresolved.
Joker rescued the Straw Hat Crew from the Navy and proposed using Hurricane Shells to fly the Thousand Sunny over the Red Line instead of descending to Fish-Man Island. The crew agreed, and Joker began modifying the ship.
The Straw Hat Crew launched the Thousand Sunny toward the Red Line, prompting the World Government to believe Mary Geoise was under attack and leaving its defenses weakened. As Imu prepared to act, Doflamingo sent a vast amount of soul energy from the moon into the world.
Doflamingo created an immensely powerful Illusion Homies Clone to protect the Straw Hat Crew and prepare for Imu’s threat. As the Thousand Sunny approached Mary Geoise, agents attacked and pulled the ship downward while Joker secretly weakened its propulsion.
The Straw Hat Crew fought their way into Mary Geoise, where Imu struck them down with overwhelming Haki and identified Luffy as the Nika Fruit ability user. A mysterious power made the sky turn red and whisked the crew away, leaving Imu to search for the hidden threat.
Doflamingo’s clone trapped Mary Geoise inside an Innate Barrier and used illusions to alter the residents while he faced Imu. The Straw Hats escaped on Oceanus’s water, and Doflamingo’s moon-based attack began as Imu prepared to fight at full strength.
Imu shattered Doflamingo’s Innate Barrier with a punch that blasted through the atmosphere, leaving his Homies body mortally damaged. Doflamingo returned to the moon and began the Second World Project by bringing sleeping people into his Illusion Space, aiming to undermine the World Government’s control.
The Second World weakened the World Government’s control by spreading knowledge and connecting people across the Pirate World, while Imu dismissed it as a belated threat. In Mary Geoise, Doflamingo’s illusion left the Celestial Dragons and their guards mentally broken, and Imu ordered them imprisoned or killed as the world celebrated their removal and worried about Doflamingo.
Doflamingo hid on the moon after faking his death, avoiding the World Government’s powerful pursuer while the Straw Hat Crew resumed its journey. When Kaido attacked Yamato’s territory in Totto Land, the Straw Hats joined the battle against him.
The Straw Hat Crew defeated Kaido and Golden Lion after a year-long war, gathered the final Red Poneglyph, and set out for Laugh Tale. As Doflamingo prepared a vast surge of soul power on the moon and Imu readied her plan, Doflamingo suddenly lost contact with the Straw Hat Crew and his Homies.
After the world’s islands and the Red Line began shifting, the Navy and other forces gathered at Mary Geoise, where the Five Elders revealed a barrier protecting the birth of a deity. Sengoku, Garp, and the Three Admirals attacked it, but none could damage it meaningfully.
The forces gathered at Mary Geoise could not break the Golden Shield as the world’s islands converged and the Red Line transformed, revealing signs of Imu’s god-making ritual. Imu explained the Celestial Dragons’ role in the plan and the origins of the D. Clan, while the defenders remained unable to reach Laugh Tale or stop the ritual.
The World Government’s godhood plan unleashed a blood-red pillar of light that weakened nearly everyone outside the D. Clan. After the Golden Shield around Mary Geoise vanished and Luffy arrived from the Final Island, he joined Garp and the others in charging toward Imu, while Homies emerged to fight the golden-armored guards.
Luffy and his allies attacked Imu at Pangea Castle while she struggled to recover from the disrupted ritual. As the battle continued, the colored mist gathered into a human form resembling Doflamingo.
Doflamingo stopped Jokerized Imu from spreading the Joker Virus across the world by replacing reality with his Illusion Space and defeating her. After the ritual collapsed, the islands joined into a continent, and Luffy learned that his next dream could be becoming the Space Pirate King.
