"Eight years... It all came down to this! Cough, cough!"
In the dark room, a thin, short white-haired man covered his mouth and coughed twice. When he lowered his hand, faint traces of blood stained his palm.
Slowly lowering his hand, the white-haired man looked out the window. From there, he could see a blond boy in sunglasses strutting arrogantly through the street, looking around as he sat atop a large man whose hands and feet were bound in iron chains.
"Doflamingo, the perfect body for possession!" the white-haired man muttered. As he watched the little boy, undisguised fury, hatred, and greed filled his eyes.
"Hey, Celestial Dragons! You'd better pray this possession fails. Otherwise, sooner or later, I'll make you stupid pigs pay!"
This was the One Piece World, the Celestial Dragons' holy land, Mary Geoise. As for this thin white-haired man, he was one of the Celestial Dragons' slaves, a common sight here. His name was Steve.
The only unusual thing about him was that he was a transmigrator.
Eight years ago, when Wang Sen had first transmigrated to the Pirate World, he had been utterly despairing.
In modern society, he had merely been an ordinary unhealthy writer, too weak to lift with his hands or carry on his shoulders. How had he transmigrated just because he took a nap?
Transmigration would have been fine. But the Steve he had transmigrated into was actually a Celestial Dragon slave!
What kind of creatures were Celestial Dragons? Anyone who had watched One Piece knew that under the hands of those bastards who treated human lives as worthless, how long could he possibly survive?
Wang Sen did not know how long he himself could live, but he knew that Steve, the body's original owner, had been tortured to death by the Celestial Dragons before Wang Sen had taken over.
At the time, the newly reborn Steve had already made a plan. He would wait two days to see whether he had a cheat. If not, before he died, he would definitely drag his "master" down with him.
Even if the Celestial Dragons had hordes of Bodyguards and his chances of success were slim, he still had to splash them with blood. Things had already come to this—what was there left to fear?
At eight o'clock the next morning, his cheat arrived. A heap of scattered, chaotic, fragmented memories—so jumbled that even a shredder could not shred them further—was forcibly crammed into Wang Sen's brain.
One second, he was a fish swimming in a lake. The next, he was a bird flying through the sky. Then came more messy images, most of them completely unrecognizable.
Every memory was a fragment. How fragmented? Not a single memory lasted longer than one second.
They gave Wang Sen nothing of value. All they did was make him clutch his head, roll across the floor, and slam himself into the walls in agony, nearly cracking his skull.
After regaining consciousness, Wang Sen examined himself for a long time before finally sensing his so-called cheat.
It was a damaged system, perhaps fully named the Soul Sign-in System.
Every other day, he could sign in through the system for a complete soul and extract skills from it. As time went by, he could even sign in for increasingly powerful souls and abilities.
But that was already a thing of the past. Who knew what had happened to the system? It had become utterly damaged.
The system could still sign in normally now, but there was no longer an option to refuse the souls it gave him.
Worse still, the system's soul-storage module had suffered some unknown malfunction. All the souls had mixed into a single mass, becoming a vast, irreparable sea of chaotic souls.
The result was that whenever it was time to sign in, the system extracted Soul Fragments from the chaotic sea of souls equal to the amount he should have received from signing in, then forcibly stuffed them into Wang Sen's head.
Naturally, those memories were like a pile of banknotes shredded to dust and then randomly pasted back together. They were of no use whatsoever to Wang Sen. Worse, because some protective measure for his soul had apparently been lost, each infusion pushed Wang Sen one step closer to schizophrenia.
Still, under the torment of that damned cheat, Wang Sen initially suffered such terrible headaches that he could barely think. Naturally, he never put his plan of perishing together with the Celestial Dragons into action.
Under normal circumstances, a sickly slave like him should have been disposed of by the Celestial Dragons long ago. However, his idiotic Celestial Dragon master found Wang Sen's daily morning "performance" of smashing his head against the wall amusing, allowing him to narrowly preserve his life.
Perhaps hardship had finally given way to sweetness, or perhaps his luck had finally hit bottom and rebounded. Just as his "master" was growing tired of the performance, Wang Sen finally encountered his benefactor: Saint Donquixote Homing.
This rare anomaly among the Celestial Dragons was in high spirits because his wife had become pregnant. He reclaimed several seriously injured or gravely ill slaves from other Celestial Dragons, treated them, and carried out some charitable acts.
Wang Sen was among those reclaimed. After enduring the bombardment of those soul bombs for so long, he had developed a certain resistance. Apart from the daily morning sign-in, he remained relatively lucid at other times.
He clearly understood that this might be his only chance to change his fate.
Saint Donquixote Homing was an exceptionally rare Celestial Dragon who could actually be called a good person.
Although Wang Sen did not know how Homing had become such a great philanthropist among the Celestial Dragons' ruling class, he understood that only under Homing's protection could he truly live normally in this hell on earth.
So, after becoming somewhat clearer-headed, he began displaying his talents before Saint Donquixote Homing.
What talent could a writer display? Naturally, the ability to tell stories.
Especially after arriving in another world, surely moving over some world-famous classics would be easy enough.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Journey to the West, and the like—change the setting a little, and they became his own creations.
This earned him the regard of that emotional Celestial Dragon. Relying on his storytelling ability, he even gained a certain reputation among the Celestial Dragons as a relatively "noble" slave.
Of course, Wang Sen did not care whether he was a noble slave or not. The only thing he wanted was to escape this damned place, preferably after setting it ablaze.
But first, he had to solve the problem of his cheat, which was practically a death warrant.
Getting used to the so-called soul bombardment did not mean that the forced infusion of souls stopped harming him. In fact, he had already begun showing signs of schizophrenia. If this continued, becoming a lunatic was an entirely foreseeable future.
There were no psychiatrists in the One Piece World. Besides, even psychiatrists could not treat an illness caused by soul bombardment. With nowhere else to turn, Wang Sen set his sights on the Pirate World's most miraculous treasures: Devil Fruits.
In Wang Sen's view, if developed properly, mental-type Paramecia fruits such as the Hollow-Hollow Fruit and the Soul Fruit might be able to deal with his fatal cheat.
But he was merely a slave. Obtaining a Devil Fruit on his own was nothing but wishful thinking.
Fortunately, although he was a slave, he was a Celestial Dragon's slave. For those fools, feeding a Devil Fruit to a slave was no great matter.
He had once discovered an Illusion Fruit in a Devil Fruit encyclopedia. This time, he set his sights on it.
As for how to make the Celestial Dragons willingly give him the Illusion Fruit? That was far too simple. He only needed to use his brain.
Well, it did not even require much thought. The Celestial Dragons might be rotten people, but they were famously stupid and rich. Fooling those idiots was hardly difficult.
He merely told the Celestial Dragons who listened to his stories every day that, if he had the Illusion Fruit, he could use illusions to bring those stories to life. They would feel as if they were truly there, far better than merely listening with their ears.
Those idle Celestial Dragons immediately had their subordinates scour the seas for the Illusion Fruit. In barely a month, they delivered it into his hands.
After eating the Illusion Fruit, Wang Sen did indeed fulfill his promise. He showed those Celestial Dragons what it meant to feel truly immersed in a story, further elevating his status as a slave.
But more importantly, it removed the Sword of Damocles hanging over his head, allowing him to truly turn his death warrant back into a cheat!
