Background / History

Nami sailed the East Blue as the Cat Burglar, swindling pirates and stealing their treasure. Though money brought her happiness, she was also a cautious survivor who could recognize danger when approaching an apparently abandoned ship 204.

Before meeting Uchiha Feiyu, she had been coerced into drawing sea charts for the Arlong Pirates. Her goal was to accumulate 100 million Beli and buy Cocoyasi Village back from Arlong, whose occupation had destroyed her formerly happy family 208. Her Arlong Pirates tattoo was exposed after Alvida injured her, prompting her to state that she hated the Fish-Men who had oppressed her 207.

Nami encountered Feiyu aboard a drifting merchant ship. She repaired its mast, took command of its navigation, and agreed to guide it to an island for repairs and eventual sale 204. Their initial partnership was unstable: Feiyu used her as a distraction against Alvida, leaving her badly injured, while Nami repeatedly tried to steal the Smooth-Smooth Fruit from him 205 206 208.

After revealing her history, Nami accepted Feiyu's proposal: he would remove the Arlong Pirates' threat, and she would serve as his navigator on the Grand Line. Feiyu then made her consume the Smooth-Smooth Fruit 209. Garp ultimately destroyed the Arlong Pirates with a single punch, liberating Cocoyasi Village and allowing Nami to leave the East Blue without abandoning her sister or home 214.

She initially wanted to intervene when Alvida tortured a village chief, and Arlong's downfall brings her genuine relief for Cocoyasi Village 205 214. Her experiences make her pragmatic: she prefers safe solutions, but gains confidence as her Devil Fruit powers and physical strength grow 211 248.
