Background
Nagato is an Uzumaki with a high-grade Sage Body, a constitution strong enough to endure the Rinnegan’s extreme chakra drain. He initially believed the eyes were his own proof of destiny and the foundation of Akatsuki’s hope for peace. In reality, the Rinnegan had been transplanted into him by Madara Uchiha, who selected Nagato as a suitable vessel. Learning this shatters Nagato’s belief that he had been born under heaven’s mandate, but he resolves to continue pursuing Akatsuki’s ideals regardless. 170 172
Jiraiya had previously trained Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan in basic ninja arts, but withheld Mount Myōboku’s summoning contract and Sage Mode. When he later seeks Nagato’s help against Uchiha Feiyu, the trio signs Mount Myōboku’s contract. Nagato is immediately reverse-summoned to the sacred land, where Fukasaku and Shima train him in senjutsu. 169 170 171
After discovering Madara’s hidden base and research, Nagato confirms the Rinnegan’s origin and remains behind to study its Yin–Yang Release applications. His training improves his ability to bear and wield the eyes, but also reveals how far his control remains below Madara’s former mastery. 171 172
Appearance
Nagato is a young red-haired man. Before his evolution, the burden of the Rinnegan leaves him somewhat frail and gaunt; the Sage’s Seal transforms him into a robust, vital form with hair described as vivid as blood and flame. 170 178
- Purple Rinnegan, later evolved into a Six-Tomoe Rinnegan. 181 184
- Can deactivate his refined Rinnegan and return his eyes to an ordinary black appearance. 178
- Wears a black cloak patterned with red clouds during his final confrontation with Feiyu. 190
- Gains six floating Truth-Seeking Orbs after receiving the Sage of Six Paths’ power. 181
Personality
Nagato is earnest, idealistic, and deeply committed to the peaceful world envisioned by Akatsuki. Though he understands that strength is necessary to protect dialogue and negotiation, he does not initially share hostility toward the Five Great Villages. Instead, he later attempts to unite them against Feiyu through cooperation and intelligence-sharing. 169 184
His faith in prophecy is central to his self-image. Discovering that Madara transplanted his Rinnegan leaves him disillusioned, while Feiyu’s overwhelming defeat of him causes a crisis of identity. The Great Toad Sage’s sacrifice and the Sage of Six Paths’ intervention restore Nagato’s confidence that he is the world’s needed protector. 172 177 178 184
Nagato cares intensely for Yahiko, Konan, Jiraiya, and Mount Myōboku’s sages. The destruction of Mount Myōboku and apparent loss of his comrades turn his resolve into a consuming desire to kill Feiyu. 181 183
Abilities & Skills
Rinnegan
Nagato’s transplanted Rinnegan grants him powerful gravitational, Yin–Yang Release, and Six Paths techniques.
- Shinra Tensei — Emits repulsive force; he can use it at basic strength safely after Sage Mode training. 171
- Banshō Ten'in — Generates attractive force, including using terrain as an anchor for rapid repositioning. 175
- Chibaku Tensei and Tengai Shinsei — Can use large-scale Rinnegan techniques in Sage Mode, but the strongest versions still consume immense chakra and life force. 171
- Chakra Rods — Forms black Yin–Yang Release receivers that can be launched as projectiles or wielded defensively. 175 177
- Asura Path — Produces mechanical limbs and weapons for close-quarters defense. 180
- Limbo: Border Jail — Creates near-equal invisible clones that can transfer damage; its invisibility fails against Rinnegan or Yin–Yang Release users. 180
- Six-Tomoe Rinnegan — Acquired after the Sage of Six Paths’ intervention, greatly enhancing his base Rinnegan abilities. 181 184
Mount Myōboku Sage Mode
Nagato’s Sage Body and Rinnegan make him exceptionally talented at senjutsu.
- Reaches stable Sage Mode after three months of Mount Myōboku training. 171
- Sage Chakra improves his physical endurance and reduces the Rinnegan’s former life-force drain. 171
- Can fight with Fukasaku and Shima fused to his shoulders through the Two-Life Technique, allowing the sages to continuously gather Natural Energy. 175
- The arrangement can be disrupted if either sage is incapacitated; Feiyu’s genjutsu briefly stops Shima’s Natural Energy gathering and weakens Nagato’s balance. 176
Perfect Sage Body
The Sage’s Seal transforms Nagato’s innate Uzumaki Sage Body into a perfect Sage Body.
- Removes the Rinnegan’s constant activation and lets Nagato fully refine Madara’s eyes. 178
- Raises his chakra reserves to the level of the Nine-Tails after the transformation. 179
- Greatly improves his vitality, physical condition, and tolerance for Rinnegan power. 178
Takamagahara
Takamagahara is Nagato’s personal Six-Tomoe Rinnegan dōjutsu.
- Overlaps a separate space with the real world. 184
- Increases spatial density, drastically increasing resistance against movement. 184
- Does not truly immobilize targets; they move extremely slowly rather than becoming completely frozen. 184
- Is especially effective against speed-based and Space-Time Ninjutsu users. 184
Sensory Abilities
Nagato’s Sage Mode grants him wide-area chakra sensing.
- Can spread his senses over dozens of kilometers while flying. 183
- Uses this range to search the Land of Wind for Feiyu after returning from Mount Myōboku. 183
Posthumous Puppet State
After Nagato’s death, Feiyu reconstructs his body and uses it as a puppet.
- Feiyu restores the destroyed body with Yang Release chakra and inserts black receivers to control it. 190
- The puppet is presented publicly as Nagato and retains access to his body’s abilities. 191 192
- It serves as Feiyu’s relay for the Sharingan Crystal Ball’s large-scale genjutsu over the Land of Rain. 194
Relationships
- Jiraiya — Former teacher. Jiraiya teaches Nagato’s trio basic ninja arts, later brings them to Mount Myōboku, and seeks Nagato’s help against Feiyu. 169 170
- Yahiko — Closest comrade and fellow Akatsuki founder. Yahiko places immense faith in Nagato’s Rinnegan as the organization’s greatest hope. 169 172
- Konan — Teammate and trusted confidante. Nagato openly reveals Takamagahara to her, unaware that Feiyu has later placed her under his control. 184 185
- Fukasaku and Shima — Mount Myōboku Sage Mode instructors and partners in Nagato’s Two-Life Technique. Shima is killed protecting Nagato during his first battle with Feiyu. 171 175 177
- Great Toad Sage — Grants Nagato the Sage’s Seal and sacrifices his own chakra to evolve Nagato into a perfect Sage Body. 178 179
- Sage of Six Paths — Intervenes when Nagato is driven into retreat, granting him further power in the Pure Land. 180 184
- Tobi / Black and White Zetsu — Temporarily merges with Nagato to enhance his Yin and Yang Release chakra during the Akatsuki-base battle. 175
- Madara Uchiha — Original owner of Nagato’s Rinnegan. Nagato discovers that Madara transplanted the eyes into him as part of a larger scheme. 171 172
- Uchiha Feiyu — Primary enemy. Feiyu defeats Nagato twice, destroys Mount Myōboku, extracts Nagato’s soul, and converts his body into a puppet. 177 181 190
Story Role / Major Arcs
Mount Myōboku Training and Madara’s Legacy
Nagato accepts Jiraiya’s offer to learn Mount Myōboku’s Sage Mode, seeking a way to ease the Rinnegan’s lethal burden and unlock more of its potential. After returning to the Land of Rain, he investigates Madara’s secret base, discovers evidence of human experimentation and stored Sharingan, and learns that his Rinnegan was originally Madara’s. 170 171 172
First Battle with Uchiha Feiyu
When Feiyu attacks Akatsuki’s base, Nagato responds with the Rinnegan, Zetsu possession, and the Two-Life Technique. Despite these preparations, Feiyu’s Space-Time Ninjutsu, superior physical strength, and Rinnegan mastery overwhelm him. Shima is killed, and Fukasaku reverse-summons Nagato and his allies to Mount Myōboku. 175 176 177
Sage’s Seal Evolution
Recognizing Nagato’s inability to defeat Feiyu, the Great Toad Sage transfers the Sage’s Seal and his vast Sage Chakra to him. Nagato’s Sage Body evolves, he gains true control of the Rinnegan, and the Great Toad Sage dies from the sacrifice. 178 179
Mount Myōboku’s Destruction
Nagato challenges Feiyu again using Limbo: Border Jail, but remains disadvantaged in close combat and is pulled into the Pure Land by the Sage of Six Paths. While he is absent, Feiyu destroys Mount Myōboku with Almighty Push. Nagato returns with a Six-Tomoe Rinnegan and Truth-Seeking Orbs to find the sacred land devastated, intensifying his hatred for Feiyu. 180 181
Alliance Efforts and Takamagahara
After reuniting with Konan, Nagato learns that Feiyu has captured the tailed beasts. He unveils Takamagahara and decides to seek cooperation with the Five Great Shinobi Villages rather than fight alone, hoping the crisis can create the conditions for lasting peace. 183 184
Final Defeat and Puppet Replacement
Eight years later, Feiyu lures Nagato into a final battle at a mountain range flattened by Susanoo. Takamagahara fails to overcome Feiyu’s speed and overwhelming physical power. Feiyu crushes Nagato, extracts his soul, and reanimates his body as a puppet. 187 190
The puppet returns to Akatsuki under Nagato’s identity, falsely claims Feiyu has been eliminated, advocates unifying the ninja world, and subsequently declares war on the Five Great Villages. Its later actions are directed by Feiyu rather than Nagato himself. 191 192 194
