Nature
Dou Qi is the central supernatural energy of the Dou Qi Continent. Cultivators absorb and refine energy from heaven and earth, circulate it through their meridians, and store it within the Dantian to increase their strength 10 16.
Its quality, quantity, and attribute determine much of a cultivator's combat power. Dou Qi can be refined into more concentrated forms as a cultivator advances, while special cultivation methods such as the Flame Mantra can alter its attribute and purity 16 22.
- Dou Qi may possess elemental or unusual attributes, including water, wind, fire, dark green, and blood 12 15 27 110.
- A cultivator's Dou Qi can be directly strengthened by medicinal pills, magical-beast flames, Heavenly Flames, and cultivation techniques 9 16 58.
- Source Qi is distinct from ordinary Dou Qi; it is a higher energy involved in reaching and sustaining the Dou Di realm 105 106 113.
Cultivation System
| Stage / Realm | Documented characteristics |
|---|---|
| Dou Qi | The entry stage is divided into segments. A cultivator condenses Dou Qi within the body before forming a Dou Qi Vortex and advancing to Dou Zhe 1 10. |
| Dou Zhe | The Dantian stores Dou Qi; advancement expands its capacity. Reaching this realm causes a qualitative bodily transformation and greatly improves Dou Qi absorption and refinement 10 14. |
| Dou Shi | Dou Qi can be liquefied and formed into a gauze-like protective garment 22. |
| Great Dou Shi | Liquid Dou Qi condenses into solid, diamond-shaped crystals; practitioners can manifest Dou Qi armor 22 51. |
| Dou Ling | Practitioners can manifest Dou Qi into tangible forms, such as armor or weapons 7. |
| Dou Wang | Practitioners can form Dou Qi Wings for flight and influence the momentum of heaven and earth within a limited area 10 11. |
| Dou Emperor | Practitioners can command greater forces of heaven and earth, stirring winds and clouds through their attacks 16. |
| Dou Zong | Practitioners can affect space 27. |
| Dou Zun | Practitioners can tear space apart 27. |
| Dou Sheng | Practitioners can create space 27. |
| Dou Di | A Dou Di can alter and bestow its bloodline, create Dou Sheng-level experts with ease, and wield power far beyond ordinary Dou Qi cultivation 97 99. |
Cultivation Mechanics
Absorption and Storage
Dou Qi is absorbed from the environment and refined through a cultivation technique. The refined energy gathers in the Dantian, where it supports a cultivator's realm and techniques 16 22.
- The Dou Qi Vortex continuously absorbs energy from heaven and earth after it is formed 16.
- A full Dantian and condensed Dou Qi mark progress toward the next major realm 10 22.
- Breaking through a major realm expands the Dantian and raises the amount of Dou Qi it can contain 10.
- Cultivation can be disrupted when Dou Qi is drained from the Dantian, as happened to Xiao Yan while Yao Lao absorbed his energy 1 3.
Refinement and Enhancement
Medicinal resources can rapidly supplement or stabilize Dou Qi, but excessive use carries serious risks.
- Qi Gathering Pills stabilized Xiao Yan's weakened third-stage Dou Qi 1.
- Foundation Establishment Spirit Liquid nourished Xiao Yan's body while accelerating his Dou Qi growth; its potency caused intense pain 9.
- Repeatedly forcing breakthroughs with pills can damage the meridians and Dantian, produce pill poison, and potentially cripple the user 2.
- Devouring Beast Flames or Heavenly Flames can transform a cultivator's Dou Qi attribute and evolve a compatible cultivation technique 16 76.
Manifestations
Defensive Forms
At higher levels, Dou Qi can be projected outside the body for defense.
- Dou Shi practitioners can create a gauze-like Dou Qi garment 22.
- Great Dou Shi practitioners can form sturdier Dou Qi armor 22.
- Dou Qi Wings allow Dou Wang-rank and stronger cultivators to fly 10 16.
Offensive Forms
Dou Qi can be condensed into weapons, seals, blades, flames, and other combat manifestations.
- Zhang Tian's water-attributed Dou Qi formed the Wave Splitting Seal, an attack capable of shattering a rock wall 12.
- Wind-attributed Dou Qi empowered the Phoenix Cry Longsword and its cutting sword Qi 12 16.
- Fire-attributed Dou Qi generated through the Flame Emperor Mantra was powerful enough to melt surrounding stone 15.
- Blood-attributed Dou Qi is noted for its offensive and corrosive properties 110.
Weapon Empowerment
Dou Qi may be infused into weapons to increase their speed, force, or elemental properties.
- Zhang Tian used his Dou Qi to control the Phoenix Cry Longsword at speeds exceeding his own flight 12.
- The Dragon Yin Halberd contains water-attributed Dou Qi and can amplify water-based seals 16 33.
- The Phoenix Cry Sword's energy can damage souls, making it especially dangerous against Soul Hall cultivators 21 65.
Limitations
- Powerful Dou Techniques consume substantial amounts of Dou Qi; Zhang Tian could use only seven Wave Splitting Seals before exhausting his reserves as a Seven-Star Dou Wang 12.
- Greater techniques demand greater physical, spiritual, and Dou Qi reserves; the Quick Spear Technique requires the integration of essence, qi, and spirit 19.
- A cultivator's attribute, cultivation method, and realm affect how effectively they can refine energy or control specialized flames 15 76.
- Ordinary Dou Qi cultivation does not grant the same capabilities as Source Qi, which is required for certain Dou Di-level feats 105 106.
