Background / History
The Gu Clan was one of the ancient races and historically allied with the Xiao Clan, whose former strength was comparable to its own. Gu Yuan had promised to protect Xiao Xuan during his attempt to advance, but failed to stop the Soul Clan; the Xiao Clan subsequently declined to a single surviving branch. 262 263
Its inherited territory, the Ancient Realm, is an independent space opened by an Ancient Emperor. Its dense spiritual energy and long-maintained spatial barriers make it the clan’s primary cultivation ground. 258
The clan’s relationship with Xiao Yan began through Gu Yuan’s interest in his talent, alchemy, and potential future value. Gu Yuan declined Xiao Yan’s offer of the Tou She Ancient God Jade, aided his contact with the Ye Family, and offered resources rather than core Gu Clan inheritances. 49 50 258
As the Soul Hall expanded across the continent, Gu Xun’er persuaded the elders that the Black Annihilation Army alone could not sustain a prolonged struggle. The clan consequently chose to support Xiao Yan, whose connection to Yao Chen and enmity toward the Soul Clan made him a suitable ally. 119
Organization and Customs
Dou Di Bloodline and Clan Marks
The Gu Clan values the concentration of its Dou Di bloodline, which dramatically accelerates cultivation. During the coming-of-age ceremony, members undergo bloodline testing and receive Clan Marks of corresponding grades. 153 258
- A ninth-grade bloodline indicates potential to reach the Dou Sheng realm. 154
- A tenth-grade Divine Bloodline carries the potential to reach Peak Dou Saint; Gu Xun’er manifested this level by lighting ten stars on the Star Disk. 154
- Clan Marks allow members to draw upon bloodline power for a temporary increase in combat strength with relatively low cost. 270
- Unlike Xiao Yan’s Heavenly Fire Three Profound Transformations, Gu Clan combatants generally rely on their Clan Marks rather than Secret Techniques. 270
Black Annihilation Army
The Black Annihilation Army is the Gu Clan’s primary force against Soul Hall.
- Regular soldiers must at least reach the Dou Wang realm. 261
- Maintaining the army and deploying its personnel substantially drains the clan’s foundation, unlike the Soul Clan’s practice of drawing experts from across the continent through Soul Hall. 119
- Its members can form the Ancient Emperor Mirror, a formation that releases attacks capable of shaking black flames from the void. 301
- The Black Annihilation King and the Ancient Clan Three Immortals served as major high-level combatants during the war against the Soul Clan. 316
Heavenly Tomb
As the Heavenly Tomb’s guardians, the Gu Clan administers access to the sacred site and its limited entry slots. 155
- The tomb contains energy bodies formed from the remains of ancient experts; its third layer includes Dou Sheng-level entities and holds Xiao Xuan at its deepest point. 155
- Each ancient race possesses two slots under the ancient rules. Gu Xun’er successfully argued that the Xiao Clan retained its right to use its own slots, allowing Xiao Yan to enter. 155
- The Gu Clan’s coming-of-age ceremony is held before the Heavenly Tomb opens and attracts representatives of other ancient races. 153 155
Assets and Resources
Heavenly Flames
At one point, the Gu Clan possessed the Golden Emperor Burning Heaven Flame, Eight Desolations Destruction Flame, Sea Heart Flame, Fire Cloud Water Flame, and a newly born Fallen Heart Flame. 280
- Gu Yuan provided Xiao Yan with a wisp of the Golden Emperor Burning Heaven Flame and later obtained a sub-flame of the Flame of Life for him. 262 263
- The clan’s elders supported the cultivation of a new Fallen Heart Flame for Dan Chen, valuing her potential as a Ninth Grade Alchemist. 290
- The clan acquired the Turtle Spirit Earth Fire after the Medicine Clan’s younger generation lost the agreed contest. 295
Alchemy Support
The Gu Clan holds extensive medicinal resources and soul-nourishing treasures.
- It supplied Xiao Yan with an effectively unlimited quantity of Beast Flames and medicinal ingredients, while requiring him to earn access to core inheritances through strength. 258
- Its resources rapidly healed Yao Chen’s soul injuries and enabled Xiao Yan’s rise to an Eighth Grade High-level Alchemist over two years. 281
- The elders’ support for Xiao Yan was partly driven by the prospect of gaining a Dou Sheng-level Ninth Grade Alchemist. 49 281
Story Role / Major Arcs
Support for Xiao Yan
Gu Yuan’s early assistance established Xiao Yan as an increasingly favored outsider within the clan. Xiao Yan later defeated Gu Yao and Gu Qingyang, after which Gu Yuan openly acknowledged him and opposition to his relationship with Xun’er diminished. 258 270
The clan’s resources aided Xiao Yan’s cultivation, flame refinement, and alchemy, while Xiao Yan’s achievements in turn enhanced the clan’s prestige and strategic position. 281 294
Conflict with the Soul Clan
The Gu Clan regarded Soul Hall as a long-term threat but initially faced the strategic disadvantage of funding the Black Annihilation Army from its own finite territory. Gu Xun’er’s proposal to support Xiao Yan and allied forces was intended to create a sustainable front against Soul Hall. 119
The clan fought the Soul Clan repeatedly through the Pill Gathering, the Ancient Region, and the struggle over the Void Devouring Flame. Its forces and the Soul Clan’s contingent temporarily cooperated to cross the Beast Tide, but their alliance dissolved once the Bodhi Heart appeared. 123 172
During the later decisive war, the Ancient Clan invaded the Soul Realm. Although the Soul Clan’s formation weakened the Gu Clan army, its high-level fighters held an advantage across most battlefields; Gu Yuan ultimately destroyed Hun Tiandi and the clan secured victory. 316
Restoration of Clan Strength
Gu Yuan sought to restore the Gu Clan’s former prominence by cultivating Xun’er, supporting Xiao Yan, acquiring Heavenly Flames, and building alliances. 276
After the Soul Clan’s defeat, Gu Yuan became a Dou Di through the Tuoshe Ancient Emperor’s Cave Mansion, strengthening the Gu Clan’s bloodline power and securing its position. 316
