At seven o'clock, Gwen Grovene sat up in bed right on time. She stretched, got out of bed, and headed to the bathroom to wash up. In front of the bathroom mirror, she carefully combed her hair, clipped on a black butterfly hairpin, then selected her favorite outfit from the pile of designer brands in her closet whose names she could not even recognize.
At seven twenty, Gwen bit into a homemade sandwich, slung her backpack over her shoulders, left home, and headed for the nearest subway station.
A new day had begun, but this day was different.
Today was her birthday.
More importantly, this was not just any birthday. It was the first birthday Gwen, as a clone, had celebrated since coming into this world.
After today, she would officially be one year old. Yeah, that still sounded weird.
Standing on the subway heading toward school, Gwen unconsciously took out her phone and opened her empty contact list. There were only two lonely contacts in her phone. One was Elizabeth Betty—the secretary who had arranged her home and school—and the other was Elizabeth's Boss, Michael. However, the latter's number had been saved as an unknown number. He could call or message her, but she could not contact him first.
And so far, he had not sent her a single message.
Gwen gave it a hurried glance, then locked the screen and slipped the phone back into her pocket.
She did not know what she had been expecting. Maybe she had hoped he would send some polite "Happy Birthday" greeting? Don't be stupid. Even she thought that idea was a little foolish.
It was true that he had arranged a new life for her, and he had indeed promised to recruit her into some special team once she was ready
