When Hydra was mentioned, most people in the know would probably tell you that it was an evil organization born from Nazi Germany. During World War II, a man named Schmidt founded the organization, instilling an almost cult-like faith in every member from top to bottom and making "ruling the world" its ultimate goal. Yes, it was a cliché, juvenile goal. In this age when villains generally had increasingly distinctive personalities, few still treated such an outdated dream as their final destination.

In truth, however, Hydra had not originally been founded by Schmidt. The organization had existed for thousands of years, and its earliest ambitions had not actually been nearly so grandiose. Its initial purpose was simple—welcoming back one of the first Inhumans born on Earth.

This part of the story inevitably went back to the experiment the ancient Kree had conducted after coming to Earth. To provide more outstanding sol(di)ers for the Kree Empire's wars, the Kree had carried out a series of genetic modification experiments on Earth, thereby creating the Inhuman race. But to make management easier, they needed a human spokesperson, an Inhuman ruler.

That was history's first Inhuman, known as "Hive."

To those he ruled, Hive was absolute authority. He was the supreme ruler, believed to be an incarnation of a god. He had been granted the gift of making any Inhuman, no matter how powerful, willingly bow and submit, allowing him to enforce the Kree's rule on their behalf.

But no matter how glamorous and magnificent his life seemed, he was still, in the end, merely the Kree's agent. Even if he was called a king, he was a king wearing shackles and working for someone else.
