Nick Fury paced back and forth in his office, his restless movements showing just how agitated he was.
He had sent Ghost out to gather intelligence. By his calculations, she should have returned by now. Yet after waiting and waiting, there was still no word. What was going on?
An inexplicable sense of dread rose in Nick Fury's heart. Ghost had never failed before, but considering the special nature of this mission—investigating Evenson—he could not help but worry.
He knew all too well what Evenson was like. That guy might look unserious all day long, acting like a cheap, pathetic idiot, but he was actually a ruthless monster!
It was obvious from the missions he had carried out. Before making a move, he always acted as though everything was negotiable. As long as the other side surrendered, laid down their weapons, and did not resist, he was happy to save himself the trouble. But once he acted, he showed no mercy whatsoever. Most of the time, it ended with the target dead.
And that guy's surveillance skills were especially strong. Fury had indeed sent people to watch Evenson for a while before, but that surveillance had only been possible because Evenson had allowed it. How many people were on the surveillance team, where they were positioned, when they changed shifts, what they did while stationed at their observation points—Evenson knew better than Fury himself. Would he notice Ghost's special method of concealment?
Thinking of that, Nick Fury began to wonder whether directly sending Ghost to investigate had been too reckless. If Ghost had truly failed and been captured, she probably would not be coming back. If her identity had been exposed as well, it would alert Evenson and make him even more vigilant. He might even take desperate measures.
