(This chapter is fairly long, so please give it some recommendations.
Also, regarding whether it feels padded, I'm a newcomer myself and still exploring. I can't fully control which parts might come across as padded when I write them. Please bear with me; I'll do my best to pay attention to this.)
Having made up his mind, Uchiha Kiyoshi carried out his plan.
After studying theory for so long, Uchiha Kiyoshi was eager to experience Medical Ninjutsu for himself.
He had always been interested in medicine. Otherwise, he would not have chosen it as his major in his previous life.
In his previous life, he had only been a third-year college student. Though he had learned the theory well, he had never gained clinical experience. It was the same in this life. He had studied theoretical knowledge for a long time, but had never actually put it into practice. If he could, Uchiha Kiyoshi would have cast the Hemostasis Technique immediately.
Unfortunately, theory was just theory. To truly put it into practice, one needed constant study and training. Ninjutsu in particular was not something one could use just by knowing and understanding the casting process. It had to be practiced until it became muscle memory, especially the rhythm of hand seals, which required proficiency. Medical Ninjutsu was no different and also required constant practice.
Why was Itachi's talent for Ninjutsu considered top-tier? He learned the Fireball Jutsu at a glance. That was not merely a matter of comprehension, but physical talent. Uchiha Itachi's body possessed an innate gift for forming hand seals, allowing him to complete them smoothly on his first attempt and grasp their rhythm.
Other ninjas did not possess such talent. They needed extensive practice and complete familiarity before they could ensure that, in battle, they would not form the wrong seals out of nervousness and fail to cast their Ninjutsu.
After carefully reviewing the information on the Hemostasis Technique once more, Uchiha Kiyoshi closed his eyes and adjusted his state.
Half a minute later, Uchiha Kiyoshi slowly opened his eyes, his expression grave. His hands began forming the seals for the Hemostasis Technique. They fluttered like nimble butterflies, forming one seal after another.
Over the past semester, Uchiha Kiyoshi might have fallen behind in other areas, but he had never stopped practicing hand seal speed, something that did not require Chakra. By now, without considering rhythm, he could form five seals in one second!
As Uchiha Kiyoshi formed seals with his hands, he silently controlled his Chakra, guiding it through a specific path within his body.
The Chakra pathways of Medical Ninjutsu were extremely intricate. This was why Medical Ninjutsu required such exceptional Chakra control, not merely because one had to control the stimulation of Chakra on a patient's wound.
For his first attempt, Uchiha Kiyoshi did not pursue speed.
The Hemostasis Technique had eight seals and required completion within four seconds. Uchiha Kiyoshi did not overestimate himself. He kept it to a little over three seconds and completed the entire sequence.
Uchiha Kiyoshi spread his hands, and green light immediately began to rise from them. Unfortunately, it flickered a few times before fading away.
Uchiha Kiyoshi was not disappointed. He had not expected to succeed in one try.
And so, Uchiha Kiyoshi began his journey of practicing the Hemostasis Technique.
Aside from practicing the Hemostasis Technique, Uchiha Kiyoshi also spent time organizing and categorizing his knowledge of Sealing Jutsu. Reviewing it again also made it easier for him to understand.
One day, half a month later.
Uchiha Kiyoshi received an invitation from Nawaki to have a gathering at Konoha's Back Mountain.
When Uchiha Kiyoshi arrived at the entrance to the back mountain, he spotted Nawaki waiting for him from far away. Watching the childish way Nawaki pretended to fight, even acting out getting knocked to the ground, was so ridiculous that Uchiha Kiyoshi could not help but laugh.
Only when Uchiha Kiyoshi approached did Nawaki notice him. Seeing Kiyoshi's expression, Nawaki grew awkward and kept scratching his head.
"Ah, Kiyoshi, when did you get here? You didn't make any sound. You scared me to death."
As he spoke, he patted his chest to show how frightened he was, completely avoiding any mention of what he had just been doing.
Uchiha Kiyoshi did not expose him and changed the subject.
"Why are we suddenly having a gathering?"
"We've been on break for half a month, so a few classmates discussed coming to the back mountain for a gathering. We heard that you often come here to hunt wild beasts and figured you had experience, so we invited you."
Nawaki explained the reason for the gathering.
Uchiha Kiyoshi snorted as he watched Nawaki explain himself so seriously.
"Do you think I don't know you? You must have gotten bored and decided to drag your classmates out here for a gathering."
Having been exposed, Nawaki looked somewhat embarrassed and scratched his head as he laughed foolishly for a while.
Uchiha Kiyoshi shook his head helplessly. "As expected of Big Pillar's grandson. The inheritance really was thorough."
Under Nawaki's lead, he arrived at the meeting place.
Nawaki had invited quite a lot of classmates this time. Basically, everyone except cold-faced types had been invited. There were several civilian students from families with ninjas, whose usual pressure was not too great, members of this generation's Ino-Shika-Cho families, as well as Nawaki and Uchiha Kiyoshi.
Aside from being bored, everyone had come because they were interested in fighting wild beasts.
Imagining themselves battling wild beasts, the children became excited and began asking Uchiha Kiyoshi about his experiences fighting them.
Unfortunately, Uchiha Kiyoshi poured cold water over them and immediately woke them up.
"Forget it. What level are we at now? We don't even know a single Ninjutsu. How are we supposed to fight wild beasts?"
"Ah? No way! But we heard you hunt a wild beast every week!"
"It's not what you think. I have hunted quite a few wild beasts, but I relied on traps to kill them. My own attacks barely hurt them, which is why I said that fighting wild beasts head-on is unrealistic for us."
Uchiha Kiyoshi explained in detail how he dealt with wild beasts. At the same time, he told his classmates that wild beasts were far stronger than they were at this stage. Their only real shortcoming was their intelligence, which made it possible to take advantage of them. Fight them head-on? Better wash up and go to bed.
Nawaki was deeply disappointed. He had thought they could hunt such large wild beasts head-on, but it turned out they could only rely on traps.
The other children were equally disappointed. They did not possess Uchiha Kiyoshi's taijutsu skill. Their current taijutsu was more like wild flailing. It could not really be considered combat, only fighting. Even Nawaki and the ninjas from the Ino-Shika-Cho families, who came from ninja clans, had enjoyed relatively relaxed childhoods. Their training was not so harsh. Compared to the Uchiha Clan's special training, their clans focused more on physical conditioning and did not delve deeply into combat techniques. Their physical training was not as intense as the Uchiha Clan's either. Therefore, before the Ninja Academy introduced taijutsu classes, they had made little progress in strength, especially taijutsu.
Other than ancient clans from the Warring States era such as the Uchiha Clan and Hyuga Clan, the systems of several other ninja clans were not particularly complete. Especially after the village was founded, those that had fully joined the Hokage's faction had fallen even further behind in training their younger generation and had gradually synchronized with the Ninja Academy. However, clan advantages still existed. Although they began formal taijutsu training at the same time as civilian ninjas, their clans had specialists to guide them—commonly known as private tutors or extra lessons. Moreover, ninja clans had their own businesses and offered their members discounts on many supplies. For cultivation resources like medicinal baths, the minimum discount was usually ten percent. As long as they were not orphans, children with active ninja parents could enjoy at least one medicinal bath a week!
But none of that mattered now. A bunch of little brats who could not even fight were dreaming of hunting wild beasts, giving Uchiha Kiyoshi a headache. Though his words had made them realize how dangerous wild beasts were, Nawaki still seemed unwilling to simply go home.
Sure enough, Nawaki's little face was full of conflict. In the end, he gritted his teeth and tentatively said, "How about we have our gathering here? We'll watch from the side while you handle hunting the wild beasts, Kiyoshi. We'll be in charge of the barbecue?"
Seeing Nawaki insist on staying, Uchiha Kiyoshi knew Nawaki was still thinking about hunting wild beasts. Now that he knew the real situation, he probably still wanted to see how wild beasts were hunted at the very least. Uchiha Kiyoshi considered it carefully. If they targeted several smaller, easier-to-hunt prey species, then the others should not be dragged into danger. He nodded and agreed to Nawaki's proposal.
When the children heard that they would still have a chance to see Uchiha Kiyoshi hunt wild beasts, they cheered.
At that moment, Uchiha Kiyoshi seemed to sense something. He looked toward the forest to his right, puzzled. "Was something watching me just now?"
As a representative of the cautious school, Uchiha Kiyoshi naturally would not ignore that feeling. After narrowing his eyes and thinking for a while, he understood.
There were quite a few ninjas from major clans here. Since the village's founding, the Ino-Shika-Cho families had firmly supported the Hokage's faction and developed rapidly. Though their foundation and strength were still inferior to great clans like the Uchiha Clan and Hyuga Clan, they had caught up in terms of influence. Not to mention that the Ino-Shika-Cho children were here, Nawaki, the young master of the Senju Clan, was as well. It was only natural that the village would know their movements and send someone to watch over them.
Having figured out the reason, Uchiha Kiyoshi relaxed and returned his attention to arranging the hunt. Still, he remained somewhat wary. After all, he did not know who was watching them in secret. If it was one of Danzo's Root ninjas, that would be different. Danzo was fully capable of abducting someone by force and planting a Cursed Seal on them. He shouted "for Konoha" so smoothly that he had probably fooled even himself. No matter what he did, as long as he said "for Konoha," he could feel perfectly justified. He was quite the talent.
Behind a large tree in the direction Uchiha Kiyoshi had looked, a ninja wearing a cat-face mask leaned against the trunk, his expression beneath the mask equally puzzled. "Did that Uchiha Kiyoshi sense something just now? Otherwise, why would he stare this way for so long for no reason?"
However, seeing that Uchiha Kiyoshi made no further move, the cat-masked ninja breathed a sigh of relief.
Nawaki had clearly been planning this gathering for a long time and quickly assigned everyone their tasks.
This was also the difference between Nawaki and Naruto. Although their personalities were nearly identical—carefree and seemingly unconcerned about anything—Nawaki had been raised as the heir of the Senju Clan. At only six years old, he was already far more capable than Naruto had been when he first appeared.
Uchiha Kiyoshi was also satisfied with Nawaki's arrangements. All he had to do was guide them in setting traps and then hunt the wild beasts. Everyone else would handle the other tasks.
That was right—guide them. Uchiha Kiyoshi no longer needed to set the traps himself, saving him a great deal of effort. It was much easier than working alone. At the same time, he could teach them on the spot, letting them experience the process of setting traps. At least they would be participating in an important part of hunting wild beasts: setting the traps.
After assigning the work, the group followed Uchiha Kiyoshi to the nearest clearing.
Over the past three months, Uchiha Kiyoshi had become quite familiar with the outer area of the Back Mountain Forest, so finding an open space was not difficult.
"Yamanaka Hayata, you'll dig the pit. Make it about two meters long and two meters wide, with a depth of one meter. Try to make the bottom as flat as possible so it'll be easier to set up.
"Also, Shinya, go set up the mechanism that fires Kunai in that tree over there. Kosuke, help Shinya out beneath the tree."
With the children helping him, Uchiha Kiyoshi had it easy. He directed them as they set up traps, and they made ten in total—twice as many as he would set when hunting alone.
In the end, under Uchiha Kiyoshi's guidance, ten decent traps were completed.
The Anbu ninja observing Uchiha Kiyoshi's group from the shadows praised them. "Not bad. They're a little slow, so their effect in actual combat would not be great, but overall, they're quite good. If prepared in advance for an ambush, they could still be useful."
At the same time, he committed it all to memory, since he would need to report it to the Hokage later.
After setting the traps, Uchiha Kiyoshi told them to hide where they were. They only needed to maintain a line of sight, and they should choose secluded spots where possible, avoiding areas he might pass through.
However, Nawaki insisted on following Uchiha Kiyoshi to take a look. Only after Nawaki repeatedly promised did Uchiha Kiyoshi agree to bring him along.
"Remember this. You can only watch from far away. Do not get close, and do not make a sound."
Nawaki was already so delighted that he had lost all sense of direction. He nodded again and again.
Along the way, Uchiha Kiyoshi taught Nawaki a few techniques.
In the original story, Nawaki had died during the Second Shinobi World War. Since Uchiha Kiyoshi had a good relationship with Nawaki now, he naturally wondered if he could save him. Explosive Tag traps were practically impossible to deal with, so Uchiha Kiyoshi could only teach Nawaki as many trap-avoidance techniques as possible.
Seeing Nawaki's distracted expression, Uchiha Kiyoshi felt helpless, but he still explained what needed to be explained. Whether Nawaki listened was not important. He would explain it many more times in the future anyway. Besides, if they could be assigned to Orochimaru together someday, Orochimaru could teach him, which would be much more efficient. As an experienced ninja from the cautious, survival-first school, Orochimaru was far better at this than a novice like him. Besides, Nawaki seemed a little afraid of Orochimaru.
While explaining things to Nawaki, Uchiha Kiyoshi also observed the surrounding environment.
"A rabbit-type wild beast. Not bad. It's just right."
When Uchiha Kiyoshi spotted a rabbit-like creature standing one and a half meters tall, he was delighted.
Such wild beasts were usually not very aggressive. As long as one did not provoke them, they would not attack people casually. That would make his companions safer.
After warning Nawaki to watch only from a distance, Uchiha Kiyoshi charged toward the beast and threw three Kunai at its eyes, throat, and abdomen.
The rabbit-like creature grew angry at once. It had not provoked anyone, yet this two-legged freak had appeared and attacked it. A rabbit that did not show its might was mistaken for—well, an actual rabbit.
It nimbly dodged the Kunai aimed at its eyes and throat. It could not avoid the remaining one, so it could only block it with a forelimb.
This wild beast's defense was nowhere near as strong as the first one Uchiha Kiyoshi had hunted. The Kunai pierced four or five centimeters into it, inflicting a fairly serious injury.
Uchiha Kiyoshi was familiar with the process and led the wild beast toward the area where the traps had been set.
It was the same old method. Aside from the necessary provocation at the beginning, Uchiha Kiyoshi did not attack at all and merely dodged its strikes. After more than three months of training, even the Anbu ninja watching from the shadows nodded at his footwork. "That movement technique is impressive for a student. Even students from the class about to graduate might not be able to hit him."
However, the more the Anbu ninja watched, the more speechless he became. He kept grumbling about Uchiha Kiyoshi internally. Your footwork is strong, but fight back! Your attacks might not do much damage, but you're passing up such obvious openings? And even if there might be traps, there's still a chance to dodge them!
He had figured it out. Whenever there was even a possibility of a trap, Uchiha Kiyoshi would absolutely refuse to take the risk. But the key issue was that every opening could potentially be a trap!
Under Uchiha Kiyoshi's "correct guidance," the rabbit-like wild beast ultimately fell into the large pit. The Kunai inside pierced through it, and after struggling twice, it looked like it was about to die.
The children all emerged and gathered around the edge of the pit, looking at the wild beast inside.
Then Nawaki suddenly shouted and rushed out. "Nice, Kiyoshi! You finished it so quickly. Haha, it's dead, right? I'll go down and take a look."
Uchiha Kiyoshi rolled his eyes. Brother, your eyesight really was terrible. What dead? Couldn't you see it still had a breath left? He hurriedly tried to stop Nawaki when he heard he wanted to climb down, but it was already too late.
Nawaki jumped straight into the pit and walked up to the wild beast. Just as he reached out to touch it, the barely alive beast suddenly opened its bloodshot eyes and swiped a claw at Nawaki.
Nawaki reacted too slowly and was sent flying by the swipe. His entire right arm was twisted out of shape, and a large wound appeared on it, blood flowing continuously.
"Ugh."
With a sigh, Uchiha Kiyoshi was truly speechless at Nawaki. You were this reckless—being able to survive until the Second Shinobi World War was already a miracle.
After examining Nawaki's injuries, Uchiha Kiyoshi sighed in relief. Thankfully, it was not too serious.
Ignoring Nawaki's cries and protests, Uchiha Kiyoshi grabbed his right arm and twisted it forcefully. With a crack, Nawaki's arm returned to normal.
However, Nawaki's pain tolerance was quite strong. Before long, he stopped crying out. Uchiha Kiyoshi did not investigate how he had developed it. It was probably another sad story—no, a series of sad stories.
Uchiha Kiyoshi looked gravely at the wound on Nawaki's arm, which was still bleeding.
Forming hand seals, he raised green light from both hands before the astonished eyes of the children and the cat-masked ninja in the shadows. He pressed his hands against Nawaki's wound. After around thirty seconds, the wound finally stopped bleeding. Once Uchiha Kiyoshi bandaged Nawaki's arm, he collapsed to the ground in exhaustion.
This was the result of Uchiha Kiyoshi's past half month of work. Unlike other healing Medical Ninjutsu, the Hemostasis Technique merely caused wounds to scab over quickly, so it was relatively easy to learn. Well, it was for Uchiha Kiyoshi. Whether it was for anyone else was another matter.
One Hemostasis Technique had completely drained Uchiha Kiyoshi's Chakra. Along with luring the wild beast earlier, it left him somewhat tired, so he lay on the ground to rest for a while.
Nawaki was filled with guilt and apologized to everyone, especially Uchiha Kiyoshi. "Sorry, I was too impulsive just now. I made everyone worry. Because of me, Kiyoshi used up a lot of Chakra and the hunting has been delayed."
The children were still young and worried about him, so how could they blame Nawaki? Uchiha Kiyoshi also said it was nothing. After recovering for a bit, he would be able to continue soon.
And so, they rested for half an hour while Uchiha Kiyoshi guided the children in restoring the used traps.
Over the course of the afternoon, they hunted four relatively small wild beasts in total. Uchiha Kiyoshi reminded them at the right moment, "That's about enough. These four wild beasts are enough for the few of us to eat."
Then they dismantled the traps to prevent them from accidentally injuring villagers. They began building barbecue racks, and the children all busied themselves.
Uchiha Kiyoshi, meanwhile, did not help from the side. He was resting, more or less.
That evening, everyone ate their fill of barbecue and chatted quite a bit, deepening their understanding of one another.
As the group returned to the village, the Anbu ninja finally breathed a complete sigh of relief and went back to report the situation to the Hokage.
