Dim light pierced through the paths between the mountains. Beneath the night sky, the off-road vehicle followed the winding riverbank, skimming across the shallow water surface as it moved slowly forward.
Along with the silent, pitch-black current, the sound of rushing travel echoed through the ancient, secluded forest.
A white-haired old man dressed in simple casual clothes followed behind the speeding off-road vehicle. His steps were unhurried, as though he were taking a leisurely stroll along the edge of the riverbank.
Yet even so, he maintained roughly the same distance from the off-road vehicle, closely following behind it.
He Ao raised his head, his gaze sweeping over the bright crescent moon in the sky. Then he lowered his head and glanced at the river flowing gurglingly beneath his feet.
Mountain hollows lay on both sides of this small river, and its current was extremely swift. It seemed to be the high-water season now. Most of the surrounding riverbank was submerged beneath the current. Though the water was not deep, it carried a slight force, concealing the dim and unknown parts of the channel ahead.
If it were winter, during the dry season, when the river had frozen over, this road would probably have been much easier to travel.
But it was the high-water season now. Someone extremely familiar with the route had to lead the way, and it was safest to travel during the day, making accidents in the river channel less likely.
He Ao raised his head and looked at the off-road vehicle glowing ahead as it sped forward.
Clearly, the driver of this off-road vehicle was very familiar with this route. Even beneath the dim night sky, the driver could still speed through the river channel, accurately finding every place where the wheels could touch down.
