"So what did you just do?"
As the last guard fell, Geslo pressed the elevator button and asked cautiously.
Ding.
The elevator doors slowly opened.
Geslo stepped inside and pressed the button for the first floor, watching the security personnel rushing toward him.
They glanced at the guards sprawled on the floor and stopped. None pursued him.
"I looked at some clues left behind when this city was destroyed," He Ao said in his ear. "Interested?"
"No." Geslo shook his head at once. "I was just running my mouth. I don't know anything, and I don't want to know anything. I'd like to live a few more years, so you don't need to tell me."
He Ao smiled at his answer and said no more.
His consciousness passed through the sealed elevator and swept over the unfamiliar yet familiar city buried underground.
For the city to have remained so intact, it had most likely been buried in an instant.
A terrible disaster had struck Kwotela, swallowing the ancient commercial city whole.
Judging by the decorations in Dernothus's home, the disaster had probably occurred within two days of Dernothus falling asleep.
Yet there were no remains or traces of human life anywhere in the city.
There were generally two possible explanations:
The first was that when disaster struck, the residents of the entire city—or at least the area they had explored—had managed to evacuate. Only an empty city had been buried, which was why no remains were left behind.
The other possibility was far more terrifying.
A mass sacrifice had taken place here. No one remained because everyone in the city had become an "offering" to that horrific event.
A god, or some other High-Level Existence, had devoured their flesh and souls, leaving only an empty city behind.
