In the silent room, a short young man crawled out from beneath an iron bed.
He looked around in confusion. "Wasn't I under the chair just now? What tricks are these Heretical Believers playing?"
He drew a slender black awl from his waist, glanced at the chipped desk covered with old stationery, then looked ahead at the window plastered over with thick cardboard and the tightly shut door.
"What is this place? Some cheap apartment?"
He covered his nose in disgust, then turned to look beneath the bed. It was completely empty. He was the only one in the room; the companion who had hidden under the chair with him had vanished without a trace.
Thump... thump-thump... thump...
At that moment, rhythmic knocking came from behind the closed door.
He frowned slightly, tightened his grip on the awl, and cautiously approached the door. Pressing himself against the peephole, he watched the scene beyond it.
A narrow, cramped, empty corridor appeared in his vision.

He leaned against the wall beside the door, gripping the awl in one hand and the doorknob in the other. Slowly, he twisted the knob and pulled the door open behind him.
The tightly shut door swung open.
The knocking stopped abruptly, and the smooth exterior side of the door appeared in the man's view.
"Outside?"
After confirming there was nothing wrong with the door, he raised his head and looked outside.
But what entered his view was not the narrow, cramped corridor he had seen through the peephole, but a silent void.
Realizing something was wrong, he immediately turned and ran backward. Yet no matter how fast he ran into the room, his body only
