"Mining ship on the Storm Sea."
Endier looked at the boy before him, his voice carrying a hint of surprise. "So those miners could do something like this too? What did you use to persuade these crewmen, most of whom had never even attended school and had spent their whole lives mining at sea? Ideals? The future? Or your vision of changing the world?"
"Mr. Mayor, we do not understand the great ideals you speak of."
The Black Shadow standing behind the boy took over this time. His voice was calm and hoarse. "We only want to live. Whoever can show us a way to survive, we will follow that path."
"Nissen, I remember you."
The cold breeze stirred Endier's plain robe as he looked at the Black Shadow. "I remember you were originally just a small boat captain with some insight. Then Skorn encouraged you to study and improve yourself."
"I'm honored that you remember."
Nissen's tone was calm. "I accepted Mr. Skorn's advice. I learned many things and also worked out many things for myself."
"That is a good thing."
Endier sighed softly, then asked, "You do not seem to like life in the Eternal Divine Kingdom? There should be no hunger there, should there?"
"There truly is no hunger there, but there is endless work."
Nissen paused, then slowly said, "We cannot rest. We cannot see a future. We cannot even freely choose death. If you entered that place, if your soul were imprisoned in an enclosed space and made to work without end, you would not like it either. What the Eternal Divine Kingdom needs are machines and slaves, not people."
He looked at Endier. "There is no hunger there, but there is no hope either. At least, not for us, sir."
