Freed from the Defense Association members' restraint, the Dementors broke away from the Patronus's entanglement and surged toward the battlefield where the two were fighting, preparing to help Voldemort kill Albert.
The Dementors' arrival undoubtedly tipped the scales of victory. It seemed Albert was about to lose under the combined assault.
