When Harry returned to Hogsmeade, triggering the Howling Charm alerted the search party waiting for him. If Aberforth, the owner of the Goat Bar, had not saved him, he might have had to go on the run again.

For someone who had been hungry for a long time, even Aberforth's hard-to-digest cooking tasted delicious.

Those search party members were equivalent to secret police. Britain had never been occupied by Germany, so it could not truly grasp the white terror brought by the Gestapo. But people in France knew it well. Never mind genuinely supporting the Free France resistance; even being suspected was enough to get someone arrested, and the reason for that arrest might have been nothing more than owning a bottle of good wine.

The Germans not only looted artworks from around the world, but also fine wines and other things that could bring them physical and mental pleasure. The Ritz Hotel at Vendôme Square had once housed Nazi officials and was one of the few places still open to the public during the war. There was a cocktail bar in the hotel where many high-ranking SS officers often gathered.

That bar became a hub for the flow of information, and its head bartender was a resistance contact. This Austrian-born bartender had learned every recipe and technique of American cocktails from legendary American bartenders. More importantly, he had learned the American style of service. Many people liked to chat with the bartender while drinking, to relax a little. It was somewhat like having a therapist.

Through those conversations, the bartender gathered intelligence, then passed it on to resistance members hiding within the hotel.
