The Lantern Festival, also known as the Yuanxiao Festival, was celebrated not only by admiring lanterns, solving lantern riddles, and setting off fireworks, but also by eating yuanxiao.

Yuanxiao were made of glutinous rice on the outside, with fillings of sesame and peanuts inside. They were sweet to eat and symbolized reunion.

The dragons danced in the streets were usually fire dragons; water dragons did not always represent good fortune. In Nezha Conquers the Dragon King, it was Ao Bing, the third prince of the Dragon King of the Eastern Sea, who had terrorized Chentang Pass. Filled with righteous indignation, Nezha killed that demon dragon and made a whip from its tendons.
