If lemonade had spared tens of thousands of Parisians during those months of 1668, keeping them from becoming victims of the Great Plague of Europe like the residents of London, Vienna, and Milan, then the plague of 1665 had not only cost Londoners their lives but had also indirectly brought about the Glorious Revolution of 1688.

After Paris successfully withstood the Black Death, people from all walks of life rushed to claim credit over the following years, hoping to take the credit for sparing Paris from another ravaging outbreak. Gabriel Nicolas de La Reynie, appointed the first Lieutenant General of Police of Paris in 1667, rose to prominence for maintaining stability through enlightened law enforcement and preventing the plague from worsening further. Certain ministers, such as Jean-Baptiste Colbert, who promoted trade restrictions and required goods to be thoroughly aired before entering Paris, as well as the six major guilds and local official Jacques Bellin, also applauded their own foresight.

The king during the London plague was Charles II, who had once lived in exile in France and later became known as the "Merry Monarch."
