In nature, there was a phenomenon called mimicry, in which certain animals closely resembled another species in form, coloration, or markings, thereby deceiving enemies and protecting themselves. For example, the Chinese coral snake carried potent venom, while its mimic, the many-banded kingsnake, was completely nonvenomous. Their appearances were extremely similar. The coral snake's bright colors were originally warning coloration, and the many-banded kingsnake avoided harm by imitating them.

Mimicry involved three parties: the mimic, the model, and the deceived. The deceived party could be a predator or prey. Among magical plants, there was one called Delphinium, which was a mimic of Devil's Snare. Devil's Snare had two forms. In dim conditions, it disguised itself as a Christmas cactus, while in dark, damp conditions, it reverted to its vine-like form. Light and warmth were its natural enemies. It would actively extend snake-like tendrils to ensnare anyone who came near, causing injury and death.

There were roughly two ways to deal with it. One was Incendio, a fire spell learned in fourth year. Though Devil's Snare was formidable and resistant to many spells, once its weakness was found, even a young wizard could handle it. The more one struggled, the tighter it constricted.

The other was the advanced lighting spell Lumos Solem. Flitwick taught this spell in seventh-year Charms. A lighting spell at the level of Lumos could not drive it back.
