Georgiana heard a miserable cry.
When she pushed open the door to the room where Mango was kept, she found two little girls about the same age tugging at the few remaining tail feathers on its tail, known as "wires," through the cage. They were having so much fun that neither noticed Georgiana had entered.
Georgiana recognized one of the girls. She was the adopted daughter of the former Duchess of Alba.
"What are you doing?!" Georgiana demanded angrily. "Can't you see it's crying in pain?!"
The two girls immediately stepped aside and clasped their hands behind their backs, looking so well-behaved that they seemed entirely unrelated to the little troublemakers from moments ago.
Only then did Georgiana realize that she seemed not to have assigned anyone specifically to care for Mango. By her usual way of thinking, one ought to care for one's own pets.

"She's here!" Georgiana shouted.
Before long, hurried footsteps sounded behind her.
"Oh, my God, you're here!" the woman said anxiously. "If I hadn't found you soon, I was about to call the police."
"Do the Brussels police have time for that now?" Georgiana asked, turning to look at her.
The woman, wearing a black hat that made her look like a coal tit, recognized Georgiana then and hurriedly curtsied.
