There were two spellings for moonstone. One was "moon stone," and it was probably the same as what Muggles believed moonstone to be. When the curved gem was turned, a silvery-white or pale-blue shimmer could be seen, hazy like moonlight. This phenomenon was called the moonlight effect, and many kinds of feldspar found in nature possessed it. The Moon itself did not shine; it could only reflect The Sun's light. This kind of moonstone was sometimes used in jewelry or worn as a talisman.

The other, "moonstone," was a stone that glowed on its own. It was itself a source of light, radiating a soft glow similar to moonlight. It was explained in the "treasure of treasures" section of Advanced Potion-Making.

It had no fixed place of origin or mineral vein and was graded only according to factors such as the intensity of its glow. It also had another name: "wishing stone." Legend said that if people made wishes to it, their wishes would come true. It was often used as a potion ingredient to make Calming Draughts and Amortentia.
