Hogwarts lay in a basin. After flowing through this area, the Piyu River formed a lake before splitting into two branches and continuing downstream. One branch flowed into a marsh, while the other wound around the mountains forming the basin and entered the highlands.

Several villages were scattered along the river. The wizarding villagers lived off the Forbidden Forest, gathering magical plants and animals that grew within it, processing them roughly, and then selling them.

But not everyone wanted that kind of life. Since ancient times, wandering wizards and smugglers had lurked in the Forbidden Forest. They robbed villagers who entered the forest to gather supplies and sold prohibited goods. It mainly depended on the difference in strength between both sides. If a merchant thought the other party was easy to fool, he would deceive them with fake dragon eggs. If he thought they were easy to deal with, he would not mind playing the robber himself.

So for a time, the villagers brought in Trolls and tried to train them as bodyguards. But they were not easy to train, and sometimes they even wandered into nearby Muggle villages.
