"Gold Necklace!" Charlie shouted as he ran toward the tree hollow where the Hippogriff was staying.

The Hippogriff, which had been dozing inside the hollow, raised its head. Seeing Charlie, it slowly got to its feet.

Pomona saw that it was a dark brown Hippogriff. It was not as eye-catching as Sirius's Buckbeak, though it had a ring of golden feathers around its neck.

"Wait!" Hagrid shouted. "Catch!"

As he spoke, he threw a dead ferret toward the Hippogriff. Gold Necklace's sharp eyes noticed it. It was clearly more interested in the dead ferret than Charlie, opening its beak to catch the food Hagrid had tossed.

"Don't forget the rules," Hagrid said sternly to Charlie.

Charlie nodded with lingering fear and stood perfectly still.

A moment later, after Gold Necklace had finished eating the ferret, it turned its bloodstained beak toward Charlie.

Charlie slowly bowed to Gold Necklace. A moment later, Gold Necklace bowed back, and then Charlie slowly straightened up.

"Good job!" Hagrid praised. "Caught it!"

After saying that, he threw another ferret. Gold Necklace tilted its head back and caught it again.

"We're teaching it manners," Hagrid said to Pomona. "It's learning quickly, but sometimes it forgets."

Pomona looked at the wild Hippogriff. When she had first seen Buckbeak, it had already been "very polite." If it agreed to let a human approach, it would bow in greeting. But evidently, this "etiquette" was not something Hippogriffs were born knowing.

In the cold winter, finding food became very difficult. Since humans provided food, why did they still have to follow Hippogriff habits and dig for insects in the ground to survive the winter in the wild?
