"Of course. Smith wouldn't pass up this chance to strengthen his own power. I remember he seemed to have two companions."
After tapping her on the head, Severus spoke.
"He has companions?" Pomona tilted her head in thought.
"They looked very alike, yet they were different 'people,'" Severus said. "I assume he used this opportunity to report to the Matrix and seize the authority of the other two for himself. That would give him greater power to capture Neo."

She did not entirely understand, but she grasped the general idea.
"Unless it is formatted, data stored on a computer won't disappear," Pomona said.
"And we all saw that the Matrix is made up of countless lines of code. Deleting code would mean..."
"It would contradict its original purpose of self-preservation," Pomona continued. "Deleting code is a form of self-destruction."
"The Matrix would not do that, so this is Agent Smith's safest way of preserving his existence," Severus said.
"By becoming part of the Matrix," Pomona said, "rather than an expendable program."
"And the Matrix must have had a purpose in splitting them into three.
