After night fell, Hagrid's hut cast a soft glow at the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Sometimes it drew hunters and gatherers from the forest to sit with him for a while. Hagrid always opened his door and generously welcomed his friends—provided those "friends" could chew through his rock cakes without shattering their teeth.

Pomona stood at the greenhouse entrance and gazed into the distance. During the day, she could see black smoke rising from the hut's chimney; if there was any, it meant Hagrid was home. So she set down the herbs she had meant to deliver and headed toward the hut.

Hagrid seemed to be in a good mood. She could hear him humming from far away, a piece of chamber music Dumbledore liked. She raised her hand and knocked on the door, and the grunting "song" inside stopped.

"Who is it?" Hagrid asked.

"It's me," Pomona said at the door. "May I come in?"

There was a rustle from inside, then Hagrid opened the door.

"Good afternoon, Professor," Hagrid said in his booming voice. "What brings you here?"

"There's something I wanted to ask you." Pomona trailed off halfway through.

How was she supposed to ask Hagrid whether he had seen an Invisibility Cloak?

"What is it?" Hagrid waited patiently for quite a while, then asked when Pomona said nothing.

"Have you seen the Potter family's Invisibility Cloak?" Pomona asked bluntly. "I remember you went to Harry's home."

"Oh, sure. It's quite valuable," Hagrid said, then turned and went back into the hut.

Pomona was not sure whether Hagrid understood what she was asking for. Then she saw a basket in the corner of the hut move. The cloth covering it shifted slightly, and a puppy's head poked out.

"You have a dog now, Hagrid?" Pomona asked.
