The Pretence Became Real

During the Triwizard Tournament, Beauxbatons had not stayed in Hogwarts Castle, but in their carriage.

That carriage had certainly been enchanted with an Extension Charm. Newt Scamander's suitcase had been expanded in much the same way. A mobile "house" like a luxury train was far more comfortable than a tent. If they were going to begin a life on the run, the best time to prepare was now.

People always showed a peculiar indulgence toward newlyweds on their honeymoon. Even though they had risen so late that they missed breakfast, the dining car had still saved food for them.

French toast was certainly delicious, but it was a little too greasy. Still, being able to eat this while on the run was already far better than Hermione and the others hunting for themselves in the wilderness, or even going hungry.

Many people were deeply drawn to France's romantic architecture and distinctive cuisine, yet forgot that the country had many beautiful landscapes. It seemed that once one left Paris, everywhere else was countryside.

While Britain was still bleak at the end of February, spring was quietly arriving in France.

Spring in France probably came around Easter. This year, Easter fell on March 27, the third day after the full moon.

A month before Easter, the greenery was not yet so lush, but people were already working in the fields. Such brilliant sunshine was rare in Britain, which was shrouded in rainy weather year after year. Perhaps that was why, when ash from the Laki volcano blocked out the sun, it felt especially like the end of the world.

Without sunlight, not only could wheat not grow, even hay could not grow. Vast numbers of cattle and sheep were slaughtered cheaply. While city dwellers ate inexpensive meat, herders suffered severe losses.
