Background / History
Pomona is the daughter of a French biological father and was raised in Britain by Mrs. Sprout. Her father provided considerable wealth but was absent from her life; Mrs. Sprout took her in after Pomona was left alone in a large residence arranged by him. She grew up learning food magic and helping with crops and livestock, developing her magical sensitivity through plant care. 1 3
Although she could have attended Beauxbatons through her French heritage, Pomona chose Hogwarts rather than study among unfamiliar relatives. She was sorted into Hufflepuff and initially sought a path beyond an ordinary school life, including considering participation in the Triwizard Tournament. 4 17
At eleven, she was tested by Hogwarts over the rampaging Whomping Willow. Rather than treating it as a hostile object, she diagnosed its clay soil and unsuitable growing conditions, proposing better soil and regular watering. Dumbledore's decision to plant the tree also served as a test of whether Pomona could manage Hogwarts' greenhouses and potentially fill its vacant Herbology position. 23 24
Pomona became Hogwarts' Herbology Professor and eventually Head of Hufflepuff. She cultivated magical plants both for teaching and for practical use, while maintaining a public image as an optimistic, fair-minded professor despite her capacity for intimidation and clandestine work. 139 181 239
She joined the Order of the Phoenix and later worked to establish a new headquarters, persuade allies, and support Hermione Granger's political future. Her apparent neutrality and Hufflepuff's loyalty made her influential during the conflict surrounding Hogwarts. 112 121 239 317
Appearance
Pomona commonly presents herself as a short, stout, gray-haired Herbology professor in worn or soil-stained robes. Her Veela form is markedly different: youthful and striking, with delicate features, sky-blue eyes, rose-colored lips, and long gray hair resembling wings. 64 135 140
- Usually wears practical robes suitable for greenhouse work. 118 139
- Pins her gray hair with pearl hairpins for formal occasions. 64 2648
- Her transformed Veela appearance includes delicate skin, a perky nose, sky-blue eyes, and wing-like gray hair. 135
- When a Veela loses control, her hair becomes bird heads, scaled wings emerge from her shoulders, and her behavior turns aggressively unstable. 27 110
Personality
Pomona is curious, independent, and inclined to solve problems by observing underlying causes rather than accepting conventional explanations. Her treatment of the Whomping Willow as a living organism reflects both her practical intelligence and empathy for non-human life. 23
As a teacher, she is patient with sincere students and protective of those who are overlooked, particularly Neville Longbottom. She values fairness but is openly partial to Hufflepuff's welfare, resists exploitative authority, and is willing to challenge colleagues when students are treated unjustly. 181 2525 2530
Her kindness coexists with a calculating and forceful side. Pomona can conceal information, manipulate circumstances, and use fear strategically when protecting Hogwarts or those under her care. She describes herself less as a fairy godmother than a “wicked witch,” taking satisfaction in commanding dangerous plants. 129 139 2713
Abilities & Skills
Plant Magic and Herbology
Pomona possesses an unusual affinity for magical plants. She senses what a plant lacks—such as nutrients or suitable conditions—rather than directly communicating with it.
- Diagnosed the Whomping Willow's agitation as a result of compact clay soil and an unsuitable environment. 23
- Detects nutritional deficiencies through her hair and instinctively identifies appropriate composting materials. 27
- Cultivates dangerous and restricted magical plants, including Mandrakes, Devil's Snare, Bumpy Vines, Fire Seed Bushes, and Venomous Tentacula. 139 1000 2520
- Her sensitivity became sharper after connecting with the “navel of the forest” through Black Ivy Water. 2750
- Cannot make a picked plant independently move or restore a dead plant; her gift is sensing needs rather than Lily Evans's direct plant animation. 2600
Combat Botany
Pomona applies Herbology as battlefield magic, using rapid-growth spells and hostile plants to restrain, injure, and intimidate opponents.
- Deployed Devil's Snare against enemy giants during the Battle of Hogwarts. 2497
- Used Bumpy Vines as her principal defense at Malfoy Manor, allowing their thorned growth to attack intruders. 139
- Avoided Poison Antidotes when children might be endangered because of their toxicity. 139
- Has used Mandrakes to drive Death Eaters away. 140
- Defended Hogwarts' maze against Voldemort's Hairy Monsters with spells and magical plants. 1106
Veela Transformation
Pomona is a natural half-blood Veela whose transformation can be classified as Metamorphmagus-like.
- Her Veela form grants wings and the ability to fly. 110 1104
- Transformation carries a serious loss-of-control risk, producing aggressive behavior comparable to a werewolf transformation. 110
- She uses Polyjuice Potion to assume the older, stout appearance associated with “Professor Sprout,” while her unaltered appearance is youthful. 135 343
- She fears becoming fully uncontrolled and deliberately suppresses Veela aggression. 27
General Magic
Pomona is a versatile witch with knowledge extending beyond Herbology.
- Casts a corporeal swan Patronus. 2540

- Is considered proficient in Transfiguration by Remus Lupin. 2523
