The bridge connecting Venice to the mainland was called Liberty Bridge. Near the bridgehead on the shore stood San Giuliano Island.

In the 12th century, a church hospital was established on the island. In the 13th century, a defensive tower was built, along with a dock and other structures. The French demolished the old tower between 1805 and 1814 and built a fortress.

In 1823, under Austrian rule, the island had a boat dock, financial institutions, and a police station.

During the revolution of 1848 to 1849, the Venetians rose against Austrian rule. After the Austrians withdrew, they blew up the fortress. It was later abandoned, and now the island was overgrown with weeds, without a single building left.

Saint George in Alga Island held the remains of a monastery built around the year 1000. From 1799 until World War II, it served as a prison and a quarry, before being abandoned after the war.

The French and Austrians imprisoned the "criminals" who resisted them here and made them quarry stone, then used that stone to construct buildings in their own countries.

Not every building was blown up by the Venetians like those on San Giuliano Island. Some remained, displaying the firearms and ammunition used during their occupation. They were that sort of "civilized nation" that believed, "If you refuse to obey me, I'll beat you until you do." They fired 23,000 shells until the Venetians submitted, without a shred of reason.

After losing their competition with Italy, the Austrians decorated the Golden Hall with looted buildings, as if they wanted to spite the Venetians to death.

The monastery on Certosa Island was rebuilt to establish a sailing school. Otherwise, that monastery could have stayed in the Summer Palace in Berlin.
