On Monday, November 8, 1969, the letter writer calling himself "Zodiac" mailed a "Zodiac letter" to the San Francisco Chronicle. Inside the envelope was a "humorous greeting card" designed by Forget-Me-Not Cards/American Greetings. The cover depicted a dripping fountain pen with a string tied around it. Beside it, the card's designers had written: "Sorry I didn't write anything. I just washed my pen."
Zodiac wrote inside the card: "I am Zodiac. I thought you should have a good laugh before you hear the bad news, though you won't be hearing any news for a while.
P.S. Could you print this new cipher on the front page? I get so lonely when I'm ignored. So lonely that I may go do my things again!!!"
Also enclosed in the card was a cipher made up of 340 symbols, arranged in twenty rows. As usual, it was signed with the Zodiac symbol.
"Maybe this cipher contains nothing at all," Pomona suddenly said as she flipped through the files.
"What makes you say that?" Gianluca asked.
"He wanted to be remembered. A cipher made up at random has no content; no matter how you crack it, there's no answer. He felt lonely, ignored. People often do stupid things to attract attention." Pomona held up the printout. "We should focus on why he wrote it by hand instead of using a typewriter."
"You think Bates really was killed by Zodiac?" Monica asked.
"He wrote it in the letter..."
"Oh, so you don't think that was one of his lies now," Gianluca said sarcastically.
"You have a problem with her?" the dark wizard Severus said with a fake smile.
The Muggle programmer Gianluca shut up.
"He was lonely. Only lonely people read that many books. At the same time, he felt he wasn't being recognized, which
