Poveglia Island was actually made up of three parts, like a tower. The section with the church and mental asylum formed the middle, while opposite the church was a small octagonal island with no buildings on it, resembling the tower's tip. The "base" was a long, narrow island, likewise without any buildings.
The "base" had once been connected to the main island, but a canal had later been dug to split them apart. The two sections were connected only by a small bridge in the middle. The priests had gone to a clearing in the woods near that bridge, where they seemed to be searching for something.
It was said that the infected had been burned in that clearing back then. There were also graveyards of various sizes along the way, not all of them dating from the Middle Ages.
If there truly was a place abandoned by God in this world, it had to be this one. Whenever a plague appeared, the sick would be sent to this island for "quarantine."
