Background / History
Golden Iron Triangle
Flender was the Flying Horn of the Golden Iron Triangle, a trio famous for its Martial Soul Fusion Skill approximately twenty years before Shrek’s tournament campaign. Its other members were Yu Xiaogang and Liu Erlong. By the time Yu Xiaogang visited Shrek Academy, the group had broken apart, and the two men had not seen each other for several years 44 212 213.
Flender had relinquished his pursuit of Liu Erlong after being persuaded by Yu Xiaogang. As their friendship deteriorated, he regretted that decision 44 64.
Teaching at Shrek Academy
When Huo Feng’s group entered Shrek Academy, Flender introduced practical combat as their first formal lesson. He took seven students to the Soto Fighting Arena, explaining that the academy’s purpose was to help them use their different Martial Souls effectively rather than impose one cultivation method on everyone 33.
After Oscar reached level thirty, Flender made the students practice accepting Oscar’s soul-skill sausages despite their discomfort with his incantations. This prepared them to use their teammate’s food abilities before the next Soul Beast hunt 35.
Yu Xiaogang’s Return and Tang San’s Admission
Yu Xiaogang arrived expecting to find Tang San among Shrek’s new students, only to discover that his disciple had not enrolled. Flender helped investigate his whereabouts, drawing on the profiles of Huo Feng and Xiao Wu, who had also attended Notting Academy. He suggested that Yu Xiaogang stay temporarily while searching Suotuo City 44 45 48.
Flender initially gave Yu Xiaogang a flattering introduction as the renowned “Master” of Martial Soul theory. However, when Yu Xiaogang later demanded both Tang San’s admission and an official teaching appointment, Flender accepted only the admission. He refused to disrupt the established teaching order and warned that he would not continue granting favors 49 63.
Tang San became the team’s substitute, designated Shrek Number Eight, while Huo Feng became Shrek Number One and captain. Flender increasingly regretted admitting Tang San, whose arena performances damaged the academy’s reputation and lowered its overall record 71 73 130.
Soto Fighting Arena Campaign
Flender restricted Huo Feng’s participation so the other students could gain experience instead of relying on their strongest teammate. Before one team battle, he instructed Huo Feng to wait five minutes before intervening 89.
When Yu Xiaogang interpreted Shrek’s apparent disadvantage against Berserk Team as an opportunity to take command, Flender rejected his assessment. Huo Feng’s subsequent reversal gave Flender an opportunity to publicly praise his chosen captain 99 100.
Manager Ao later requested Tang San’s inclusion in a Central Main Soul Arena match. Flender questioned the danger posed by the opponents, then negotiated the financial rewards. He agreed to distribute seventy percent of the earnings among the students and retain thirty percent for the academy 108 109 110.
Transfer to Heaven Dou Royal Academy
Flender arranged a year-long exchange at Heaven Dou Royal Academy so Shrek’s students could participate in the All-Continent Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament. Better cultivation facilities were another important reason for the move 137 146.
Leaving Shrek’s old campus was painful for him. Looking at its dilapidated signboard, he reflected on twenty years of memories before ordering the group to depart. Although impressed by Heaven Dou Royal Academy’s hospitality, he still felt that it could not replace his own home 143 147 148.
After completing the transfer procedures, Flender announced that the group would retain the Shrek Team name. He also planned to mobilize all Shrek teachers once several students reached their next Soul Power bottlenecks, allowing them to obtain new Soul Rings together 153.
His relationship with Yu Xiaogang continued to collapse. Flender eventually resolved to remove both Yu Xiaogang and Tang San from the academy because of the damage they caused to the team’s image. By the tournament period, they had joined Blue Tyrant Academy 177 192.
Tournament Campaign and Championship
Flender entrusted Huo Feng with tactical arrangements and lineup selection, emphasizing that Shrek should reveal as little of its strength as possible during the qualifiers. He identified the Spirit Hall Academy Team as their principal obstacle to winning the championship 194 221.
Shrek’s growing popularity allowed him to secure advertising sponsors. Ning Fengzhi also proposed sending Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect disciples to study under him, explicitly crediting Flender’s guidance for the students’ development. They agreed to discuss the cooperation after the tournament 209 261.
During the Promotion Tournament, Flender coached Xiao Wu to evade Lei Tian and conserve Soul Power. She won without attacking after her opponent exhausted himself. Before the final against Spirit Hall Academy, Flender joined the students’ stacked-hand battle cry; after their victory, he and the other teachers congratulated the champions 292 314 330.
Personality
Flender is proud of Shrek Academy and protective of his authority as its dean. He defends its reputation despite its shabby facilities, and his refusal to appoint Yu Xiaogang as an official teacher shows that old friendship does not outweigh his responsibility to the existing staff and students 48 63.
He is also famously stingy and commercially shrewd. Resenting Yu Xiaogang and Tang San’s continued reliance on academy resources, he publicly named Yu Xiaogang as a contributor to a celebration dinner without obtaining his agreement beforehand. During the tournament, he pursued sponsorships so enthusiastically that Zhao Wuji handled opponent observation while he negotiated advertising deals 104 209.
As a teacher, Flender combines encouragement with blunt criticism. He praises coordination and individual strengths, but warns students against becoming complacent or depending on Huo Feng to secure every victory. He treats a disappointing draw as useful experience rather than merely a failure 103 130 255.

- Assigns numbered identities from Shrek Number One through Shrek Number Eight 71.
