Background / History

Vermithor was formerly King Jaehaerys’s dragon. After becoming riderless, he slept within Dragonmont alongside Silverwing, aggressively guarding the deeper cavern where his mate rested. Dragonkeepers considered awakening him exceptionally dangerous due to his violent nature. 53 59

Guided by dreams, Aemon entered Vermithor’s cavern and awakened him by singing the Dragon Song. Vermithor immediately answered the intrusion with bronze dragonfire, melting stone at the cave entrance and killing several guards who failed to escape. 53

Vermithor initially dismissed Aemon as an unworthy, weak child. Aemon nevertheless climbed onto his saddleless back, survived the dragon’s punishing flight and final trial by fire, and gained Vermithor’s respect. The dragon accepted Aemon as a rider and allowed the formation of a mental bond. 54 55 56

Appearance

Vermithor is a colossal bronze-scaled dragon with a heavily built body, broad brown wings, and bright bronze vertical pupils. By the time of his post-slumber growth, he exceeded 100 meters in length; later accounts place him around 120 meters long. 53 103 338

Personality

Vermithor is arrogant, domineering, and easily provoked. He cannot tolerate other dragons flying above him and may become violent without warning, earning the name “Bronze Fury.” 58 59

He respects endurance and strength rather than obedience alone. He initially rejected Aemon as weak, but accepted him after the boy survived his fire and refused to abandon the attempt to tame him. 54 55 56

Despite his foul temper, Vermithor becomes protective of Aemon and increasingly cooperative over years of partnership. He lowers his shoulder to help Aemon dismount or mount, and shows affection by nudging him with his snout—though his strength regularly knocks his rider backward. 59 76 118 179 213

Soon after bonding, Vermithor demonstrates his combat superiority by maiming Seasmoke near Driftmark. He later destroys the Mountain Clans’ forces at Green Ridge, allowing Aemon to pursue the survivors and secure new territory. 58 74 75

River Valley Development

Aemon uses Vermithor’s dragonfire for practical projects, including lime production and large-scale copper smelting. Vermithor’s destructive power thus becomes a tool of construction as well as war. 88 228

Dragon King of Lonely Mountain

Following battles with Caraxes and Vhagar, Vermithor defeats Vhagar and becomes the acknowledged dominant dragon of Lonely Mountain. Silverwing’s position beside him reinforces the image of a dragon king and queen. 228 229 232
